02:48 am The Christmas Tree by Marlene S. (G)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky & Hutch

Why this must be read:

In this short, sweet denouement to the tag of "Little Girl Lost", Aunt Rosie inspires a change in Starsky's attitude toward the gift Hutch got him. It gives us a peek into Hutch's past to demonstrate the reason behind his seeming-lack of holiday spirit, and we see how the love and affection between himself and Starsky is enough to draw him back into that spirit, all these years later. The story's simply a bit of warm, sentimental loveliness for the holiday season :)

"He just did it to prove a point," Starsky added, popping an olive into his mouth.

"You're sure of that?" Aunt Rose asked, as she turned around to face her nephew.

Starsky started to answer her, but before he could speak she added, "Davey, did you even see the tree yet?"

Why this must be read:

It's easy to forget that Kira Nerys -- former terrorist, religious believer, unrepentant racist -- isn't the most obvious Trek second-in-command. The early DS9 seasons played up the conflicts between Kira & the Federation, and Yahtzee picks up this thread in 'The Long Haul'. Set before the Federation arrives on the station, it's a quiet character exploration, as Kira reflects on the different demands that peace & collaboration are bound to bring. There's also a subtle portrait of her friendship with Odo. Yahtzee's handle on the character voices is, as ever, perfect.

Why this must be read: First person stories rarely work for me but this short fic which the author's summary describes as a story "in which Kara is drunk and Lee is evil, but in a well-meaning way" is a note-perfect reading of the friendship, annoyance, rivalry and comfort that is the relationship of Starbuck and Apollo. The author's hand is deft and light in drawing out the situation and the characters. This story's short and sweet, but not at all cloying.

Fandom: BLAKES 7
Pairing: None? (BLAKE/AVON?)

Why this must be read:

I know. I promised Slash and this is Gen again. Gen *tries to keep a straight face*. Of course. Like...

"I'm sorry," Avon said.

"As am I." Blake put a hand over Avon's where it still gripped his arm.
"Neither one of us has come through this unscarred."

"I looked for you. I was always looking for you. None of the rest of it
mattered."

Blake nodded. "I know that. Once I got over my bewilderment and sense of
betrayal about Terminal, I understood that. What I said on the Liberator
that day was true. I always trusted you. I still trust you."

Just Gen then. Hum. Very well written, PGP and Avon suffers beautifully -of course. Blake is perfect as a nurse and they obviously intend to leave the world behind and build their whole little love shack shelter. Avon and Blake hiding their healing love friendship from prying eyes. It's very clear that no one else, nothing else (Blake sounds very blasé about the Revolution) matters. How do I know? Well, go, read...
