A Momentary Lapse of Reason by Otter (PG-13)
Hello there. My name is Isagel, and I'll be behind the steering wheel of the Crack Van for House this month. I'm a devoted House/Wilson slasher, and probably best known in this fandom as a pathetic sucker for all things Wilson. So consider yourselves warned. ;) Now, lean back in your seats and let's pretend this isn't a van at all, but a red '65 Corvette...
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: House/Wilson, (Wilson/Julie)
Author on lj:
agentotter
Author Website: faded press
Why this must be read:
After one and a half seasons of the show, Julie, Wilson's current wife, is still an unknown quantity. She is mentioned, but never shown, and though it's clear from Wilson's and House's remarks that the marriage falls far short of happy, the only thing we really know about her as a person is that she hates the colour green. In other words, she's an empty outline for fanfic writers to fill in any way they choose. As a result, there are innumerable takes on the Wilson/Julie relationship, but of the fics that have it as a main focus, this is perhaps my favourite.
Through House's eyes, Otter shows us the beginning and the end of his best friend's third marriage, a double-exposed picture of the past and the present, tinted with the observer's own loneliness and unspoken love. As always in Otter's stories, the character voices are pitch perfect, every detail believable and right. Her writing is understated and deceptively simple, and, in its very simplicity, deeply, genuinely moving. Otter captures what to me is one of the most central things about the show, and one of the hardest not to fumble in fan fiction - the feeling of emptiness and desolation, of life as a wasteland where the connection between House and Wilson is the only warming light. In short, this is House fic at its very best.
