Why this must be read:
A lot has been done with the idea of Jack and Sawyer meeting once again after being rescued, but this fic takes that notion and expands it into this complex thing of beauty that's practically canon. On New Year's Eve in New York City they meet in a bar, presumably by chance, only to discover that nothing about their meeting is coincidental. It becomes apparent as the night wears on that they were fated to collide. The details here are breathtaking, and the dialog is perfect.
“That pileup, Doc. I was there. In L.A. for two days, and I spent one of ‘em sitting still on the freeway with a bunch of fuckin’ rubberneckers. Listened to the game on the radio. Sox beat the Yanks 4-3. Game over just as I was driving by the damn wreck.”
Sawyer grabs his drink and knocks back the rest, ice clinking against his teeth. He slides forward a little on the smooth leather of the barstool, balance shifting slightly, his denim-clad knee suddenly touching Jack’s thigh.
“Jesus,” Jack says. “I must have been twenty minutes behind you.”
Jack barely has time to notice he’s emptied his glass before Sawyer grabs it out of his hand, gripping it by the rim along with his own and holding them in the air to get the bartender’s attention. “Gonna need more over here.”
