Why this must be read:
Illya's night of innovative off-Broadway theatre is rudely interrupted by Mr. Waverly...and to make things worse, he's after Napoleon. Illya has the unenviable task of interrupting Napoleon's glamorous night of high-stakes poker at the rich end of town. When they discover Waverly only wanted Napoleon for a late-night briefing, they are left disgruntled at their ruined plans for the evening. Bickering ensues...and the start of an intriguing challenge.
Vivid yet economical description draws the reader into the worlds inhabited by these two different personalities. Napoleon's generosity before the denouement is surprising yet very in-character. Illya's take-no-prisoners approach is him through and through.
A deceptively simple story cut into sparkling brilliance by first-rate characterisation.
