Why this must be read:

Because this story breaks every rule I thought existed for the making of a plausible, let alone mesmerizing slash story. The villains are Satanists in very silly outfits, macho men weep their guts out, and worst of all, I can hardly bear to confess that most heinous of all fanfic crimes -- rape is made better through hot-man-on-man sex!

Dear gods, I should hate this story with a passion, but instead I can’t stop indulging in the guilty pleasure of re-reading “Remnants” every couple of months. Because against all fanfic reason, Rosemary makes all of the above work. The Satanists are genuinely menacing, the tears are not only justifiable but pretty darn manly, and the post-rape sex is not only believable, it's so damn hot it should be illegal.

Ah well, I guess the old aphorism is true: learn all the rules so you can break them well.

I love this story. Sometimes I think you should just go ahead and break all those damned rules and see where it leads you. Sometimes it's fun and meaningful and even if you go a little wild you can carry others if you've got the passion and talent Rosemary has. It ends up being one of those improbable fics where the drama and the angst get under your skin and you can't forget.

This was one of the first S/H fics I read, and when Rebelcat described it to me, my response was "You've got to be kidding me!" But as you said, Rosemary's got the stuff to pull it off, and the result is unforgettable.

I can live with the Satanists, and the tears, and I suppose the post-rape sex, though I'm not exactly thrilled about it. But the story has a therapist in it, and that's an unforgivable crime in my book.

Your comment made me smile, because Hank the therapist saved this story for me. I don't think I could have coped if the hot-man-on-man sex had made the post-Satanic trauma all better on its own.

Then again, I recently saw "Partners" which might be why I'm convinced that Hutch desperately needs psychotherapy. Or at the very least, an anger management course. :-)

I never got around to reading the hot-man-on-man sex -- since whenever I start a story in which rape is mentioned in the warnings, I check out the end, and saw a therapist was mentioned -- but I gather the Satanists made them do it, instead of sitting around and talking about it. They had the right idea. I like them already. :-)))

None of this is intended as a knock against Rosemary, just against therapists.
