The Pandora’s Box Affair by Rosemary (NC-17)

In my dossier, fan fiction exists to fill in the blanks left by a series’ or movie’s creators. In the case of “Man from U.N.C.L.E.” this is especially true because so many things were presented as a fait accompli – or not at all. The few brief, but tantalizing tidbits of personal information about characters doled out have inspired writers to great lengths of fanon, and I love people who can work their fanon seamlessly into canon. Rosemary is just such a writer, and she does it so well!

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Why this must be read:

Napoleon is the consummate Ladies’ Man. Suave and debonair, he knows precisely how to be just what a woman – any woman – wants. It’s one of the many reasons why the charming Mr. Solo is so successful an operative, and of course, it intrigues him that the one thing that causes an adverse reaction in his brilliant but deadly partner is when a lady comes on to him. Napoleon is also, for lack of a better way to put it, a “people person.” Illya, decidedly, is not, so it also comes as no surprise that Napoleon is interested in figuring out just why his Russian partner isolates himself as much as possible.

For a story that has Napoleon recalling how he and Illya became lovers and how their relationship ended, this one takes a couple of fanon old shoes – namely why Illya runs from the ladies; why he joined U.N.C.L.E.; why he’s in Enforcement, instead of a full-time scientist; and what was the cause of the dissolution of the best partnership in U.N.C.L.E.’s history – and runs with them. Rosemary is not only a good writer, she’s also able to deftly interweave fanon and canon over the span of the series, and she uses the dreaded “…‘Fifteen Years Later’ Affair” to frame the piece and make it work brilliantly! She takes the first time convention of for the sake of the mission we must have sex and makes it fresh. Her dialog is snappy, and she distills characterization, setting, and mood like nobody’s business. Although she offers a physical cause for Illya’s behavioral quirks, don’t let that stop you: she keeps him strong and surly, and Napoleon cocky and confident.

Oh, and the sex is scorching -- my, yes! -- and at 335 K, there’s a lot of story, and smut to go around.

Unable to accept what his partner was doing to him, Napoleon's disbelieving gaze shot to Illya's face, wondering if the Russian were truly planning on playing this farcical scene through to its inevitable conclusion.

Maybe Illya was just trying to make it look real, his frantic mind suggested as his body went wild beneath that tentative touch.

At that moment, trapped in the torturous limbo between desire and propriety, Napoleon didn't know which would be worse: Illya actually following through with this or just going through the motions to put on a convincing show for their perverted audience of one.

If Illya chose that second option, his partner was in for a big surprise, the mortified Napoleon acknowledged. He knew his own body very well. Considering his present state of arousal, there'd be no stopping now.

Napoleon wondered what his own face was revealing when those steely blue eyes caught and held his gaze as Illya's fingers began a tentative exploration of the hot, moist organ they cradled. From the guarded expression in Illya's eyes, Napoleon could tell that his partner was fully expecting him to draw his gun and shoot him dead on the spot.

Were his own eyes equally as telling, Napoleon wondered, worried about what his friend was thinking about him. Was his gaze doing his passion's bidding and pleading with Illya for release? Did it seem that Napoleon was enjoying this sick scene? What must Illya be thinking? They both knew that were this any man on Earth other than Illya, the guy would have been lying in a bloody heap on the floor after the first intimate touch.

"I regret this...impertinence." Illya gulped, seeming as uncomfortable as Napoleon. "You can kill me for this later, Napoleon." It sounded like a promise.
