Since I am starting late with my recs because of travel, I figured I would start with the shorter stories in the vain hope I will catch-up faster.

ds_flashfiction with the most perfectly matched title in existence. For reasons that don't need exploring Ray Kowalski and Ray Vecchio end up as partners after the series and in a confrontation Ray Kowalski throws his gun at a perp much to his horror and Vecchio's amusement. The story so deftly captures both Kowalski and Vecchio that I get beautiful, hilarious, technicolor, canon-esque visions of its events which is the best kind of gen short story in my opinion. As the icing on top, we see how Vecchio, because of his common background of both Chicago and Fraser, can commiserate (and mock) and help Kowalski work through his conflicting emotions at 'pulling a Fraser' which means we can see how these two could work together despite their rocky interactions in CotW.
After, as Ray was staring at his empty fingers—where, only moments before, there had been a gun—as he was listening to the perp scream obscenities ("Fuck! You broke my mother fucking hand, you fuck!") off to his left, all he could think was: Well, okay then.
And also: Damn it, Fraser.
Because Chicago cops, see, they didn't throw their guns at perps in an attempt to—to disarm their assailants. Not even when they had an empty clip and thus, for as long as it took them to reload, the gun was just a useless hunk of metal.
