Why this story must be read:
Doomsday, the series two finale, has already spawned a huge number of stories. This is one of my favourites, because it's not simple, but is by turns humourous and emotionally effective. It treats all of the characters with respect, and allows Rose to grow up. Doctor/Rose pairings aren't usually my cuppa, but this won me over.
Her Mum gives her a ring one night when she’s taking a tv dinner out of the freezer, tank top riding up as she tries to balance the package on her knee and the phone between her shoulder and ear, air from the freezer cold and breezy on her cheek.
“Rose, darling,” she says. “What are you doing tomorrow night? It’s Mickey and Jake’s sixth anniversary, remember, so I thought we could all do something together. They’re coming into town tomorrow. Wouldn’t that be nice?”
“Yeah, Mum,” she says, and makes a mental note to pick out an anniversary gift that’s unlike the first one she gave them, which made Jake laugh and take her out for pizza Friday night, alone, and Mickey blush bright red and refuse to speak to her for a week. Though then again, it had been quite funny, so she supposes she’ll see.
