Hutch's Ladies: Sweet Alice by Elizabeth Lowry (R)

For the last go-around of SH this month, I'm reccing a couple of series by Elizabeth Lowry.

Fandom: STARSKY/HUTCH

Pairing: Starsky and Hutch

Why this must be read: I've always been fascinated with the character of Sweet Alice and this trilogy looks at her a little more closely. Perchance to Dream is Hutch's first meeting with Alice. He's paired with Luke Huntley and we see a little bit of how they worked together in Hutch's early days, but also we see how drastically different their approaches are towards those that are less fortunate. Alice got beaten and it was up to Luke and Hutch to find out who did it. And when Hutch needs to talk about it, work through it, Starsky's the one he opens up to. There's mentions of a couple of characters that we'll meet later on in the series and explanations of just why some relationships that we saw were so fractured.

In Sweet Dreams, it's 12 years later and the team of Starsky and Hutch are partnered. And some things never change as we see Hutch once again trying to take care of Alice after somebody played a little too rough with her. Alice explains how she came to be in the situation that she's in and Hutch tries to get her out of it. But sometimes it's just a dream, a brief escape from the madness.

Death Dream finishes off the trilogy and seemingly is an end to many things. Hutch is being questioned by our not so favorite pair from IA. The threads of what life Hutch has created are slowly being torn. Repeated hopes that someday everything will be right again, that doesn't seem to be happening. He wanted to save Alice, he wanted her to escape the pain that she had experienced, but time and again it was not meant to be. Now, it seems like it will never be. And lies built on deception makes us wonder if we ever really knew the person we cared for.
