Why this fic must be read:
Ah, Andreas Volpe - he who wandered into a Due South alley, patted down Ray Kowalski and got a bullet for his troubles. The author has woven together a first meeting for Volpe and Kowalski from a failed arrest - dealing sugar on the streets of Chicago! - in Kowalski's first days at the 27th.
This Volpe is smart, confident and smooth - his voice and attitude particularly well done for someone so briefly alive - but with the underlying steel of a criminal with aspirations. Kowalski is his somewhat edgy self, circling Volpe like a moth towards a flame. Welsh, the background and the criminal plot are all well crafted and concludes with a wary truce between the two.
Wow! Caught myself a big fish here. Still, almost a shame he'll be put away for a while. "I'm taking you to the 27th precinct."
He's almost laughing. "Yeah, I figured we weren't going to your place, Vecchio."
Nothing besides your stomach doing a samba should feel like your stomach doing a samba. So I'm guessin' that's what's happening. Grinning, I tell him, "Don't have any of the bars and cuffs and restraints at home, so... nope."
Nice to know he's not beyond having his smugness tossed back in his face. I'm sure I'm seeing a flicker in his eyes. Oh yeah. I got him with that one.
"No private collection, Detective?"
Maybe it's him who's got me. "For me to know, for you to..." Fuck!
