Squaring Accounts by Melusina (NC-17)
Greetings! I am
the_stowaway and I will be driving the
crack_van this month for Pirates of the Caribbean.
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack, Elizabeth, Will, Norrington (various pairings)
Author on LJ:
fabu
Author Website: Cultural Infidelities
Why this must be read:
This story is the sequel to Triangulation, which has been recc'd here previously. It is long (about 40,000 words) and the author warns for "graphic depictions of sex and violence."
Squaring Accounts has some of everything – action/adventure, humor, angst, magic, and, of course, top-notch smut. It continues the tale of Will and Elizabeth as pirates aboard the Black Pearl with Jack. They find Commodore Norrington, who had been washed off his ship in a storm, marooned on an island and rescue him. Complications ensue.
What follows is a swashbuckling adventure – complete with chases, sea battles, some beautifully realized magic and the most chilling villain since Barbossa. All seamlessly intertwined with various romantic plotlines.
Melusina does a wonderful job of portraying the dynamics of the Jack/Will/Elizabeth relationship – both the strengths and weaknesses, the joys and the stresses. Norrington's presence gives an intriguing spin to the situation, which she explores sypathetically but without giving easy answers. Her characterization is spot-on throughout.
It's great fun and a real page-turner.
