Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack/ Elizabeth
Author on LJ:
artaxastra
Author Website: none known
Why this must be read:
Lyrical and haunting, this short fic is set on the fourth night out of Tortuga (spoilers for DMC), aboard the Pearl. Elizabeth is as fascinated as ever by pirates (one in particular), and she's coming to grips with (and tempted by) the reality of them.

It was Ragetti who owned the guitar. He got it out on the fourth night out of Tortuga. The thunderstorms had passed westward, leaving the sky clear and black, lit with a thousand stars. Gods are born in the desert or on the sea, where the clouds roll back and even an ordinary person can glimpse eternity.
Standing at the rail of the Pearl, listening to the cheer on the main deck, Elizabeth felt strangely removed. The stars turned slowly overhead in some mysterious, vast pavane, and on this tiny scrap of deck there was a pottage of peas and salt beef, a double ration of rum as last night there had been none as they fled before the storm. Ragetti had his guitar out, and one of the others a flute. Pintel was dancing an awkward and strange dance, while everyone bellowed out the words to some obscene song. A real pirate song, Elizabeth thought. Real pirate songs were usually obscene. But for a moment, just for a moment, it looked like what she had always imagined a pirate ship looked like, back in the nursery in Devon.
Jack was in the middle of it, of course, shouting out the words in a tuneless baritone, dancing around Pintel with a great deal of sass and flare, giving them the miller's daughter with a bit of a swish, hair flying.

Artaxastra is one of the newer voices in the Pirates fandom, and we're fortunate to have her. She has a fine sense of history that gives depth and reality to her stories. Her characters - Jack, Elizabeth and Gibbs, especially, in this one – ring true, defined as much by what they don't say as what they do. Good stuff.
