Why this must be read:

This is a longish and rather charming tale of young midshipmen Gillette and Groves in Portsmouth. It continues the story begun in The Crooked Staff, wherein the boys (they are 18 and 19) first meet at a molly-house (historical term for an establishment – part tavern, part brothel - that served homosexuals). Groves is in town for the lieutenancy exams and sharing lodgings at an inn with his new friend Gillette. Their growing friendship – and something more – is told with a wealth of historical and naval detail that is a trademark of Gryphons Lair's stories.

The young men are engagingly drawn – you can't help but like them; they are such boys in their manner of speaking. Their encounter with a pawnbroker's widow is very amusing, as is a conversation about family origins.

The sex is hot and a little awkward and, dare I say, sweet, without being the least bit schmoopy.

Altogether, this is a very enjoyable read and a completely plausible backstory for two very popular minor characters in the Pirates universe. It is easy to imagine that it did indeed happen just this way. Highly recommended.
