Wouldn't You Like To Get Away by Doyle (PG)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None
Author on LJ:

Author Website: Hall of Mirrors
Why this must be read:
Doctor Who fandom: The place where the crack is canon. And thus, so is the fandom. I mean, what other fandom would hold a ficathon for a character who won't actually be seen for another six months? And thus we had the Marthathon, a ficathon about Martha Jones, the upcoming companion for Series Three. Because this fandom is just that mad.
One if my personal favourites of the Marthathon was this fic, set after Martha has left (yes, it's set after the departure of a character we have never seen. Just go with it, okay?) And it's a lovely exploration of how being a companion of the Doctor can change you, as well as what the Doctor and companion mean to one another. Plus, it has a lovely characterisation for Martha, and some truly hilarious dialogue.
“How long’s it been for you?” she asked.
“Since I had party rings? Ages.”
“Since you dropped me off, you twat.”
“Oh, probably the same as it’s been for you,” he said shiftily. “Seven, eight months, taking into account the curve in space-time, the fact that time is relative, the difficulty of building a clock that works when you’re always popping in and out of the vortex...”
“And yet somehow,” Martha said, folding her arms in a way she was painfully aware was identical to what her mum did when she was gearing up to tell Dad off, “you’ve gone eight months without picking up someone else?“
“I never said that. They might be back at the TARDIS, for all you know.”
“’All on my own’, you said.”
“Did I? Yes, well, you were hard to replace…”
“You’re always asking people to come with you. We couldn’t go out to dinner without you asking the waiter if he fancied a trip through time and space.”
“In fairness to me, that only happened the once and he was a very, very good waiter.”
