Why this must be read:

When the series came back last year, it was obvious a large amount of the Doctor's life had been skipped, what with the new body and the Time War and all. And judging by interviews with the current production team, it looks like that isn't going to change much any time soon, meaning that the time between the end of the movie/books/audios/[insert personal canon here] and Rose is going to remain somewhat of a mystery to us. Which is in certain ways, a bit disappointing - especially for fans of the Eighth Doctor.

This fic covers a short amount of this time, showing us an immediately pre-Time War Eighth Doctor, having one last day of happiness before it all comes crashing down. It's brief, but beautiful, with wonderful characterisation of this Doctor (you can see he's the same guy who kissed Grace just for the joy of it), full of hope and life, and yet with just a touch of sadness to him. And the cameos from assorted characters are utterly wonderful.

Tomorrow, the world is ending, and today, he is happy.

He goes to London, May 1945, watching the people rejoice and the war be over. He snogs complete strangers. Complete strangers snog him. He sings all the wrong words to songs and no one cares. He dances with an old woman in the street to silent music, and she rests her head on his shoulder and sighs. Just once, just happy.

Tomorrow, she's going to die, he knows. But then, so is he.
