Why this must be read:
Set between the first two movies, this is a truly novel take on the relationship between Jack and Anamaria. Theirs is an interesting relationship, adversarial but with an undercurrent of affection, and of course there's Jack's debt to Anamaria, the ship she won't let him forget he owes her. Linaelyn has a particular gift for writing the pirate minor characters, bringing the denizens of the Pearl to life in vibrant detail. Although this story is all about Jack and Anamaria, Linaelyn's fleshes out their world with a vivid depiction of life aboard the Pearl and a slowly revealed backstory that is surprising and yet strangely perfect.
