Why this must be read:

This story is THE most beautiful, well-written, well-timed, and in-character story of Kazuki and Juubei's reconciliation out there. It's like listening to a smooth piece of classical music - the repeated structure, the way the scenes fade out at a moment that sticks in you head and echoes. The pacing of this story is just breathtakingly right.

It's surprising that there are so few stories on this theme, but perhaps this story explains why: although Kazuki and Juubei would obviously have a lot to say to each other, very little of it would be said in words. They understand each other too well to be dramatic about it.

Kadsuki closed his eyes and touched his hand to Juubei's face, touching the bandages, running his fingers over the smooth, sharp plane of Juubei's cheekbone, down his nose, to his lips and his chin. He stopped at Juubei's neck, and leaned his forehead against Juubei's shoulder. "Juubei," he murmured, "you haven't changed."

He heard the frown in Juubei's voice. "Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Close your eyes." A hand ghosted the back of his neck, brushed away the queue of his hair and touched the exposed skin, a cold whisper of touch. "Don't do that. Look at me, Kadsuki. See for both of us."
