Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: Paul, Ban Length: One-shot Author on LJ: zanzarawritesAuthor Website: Why this must be read: Paul doesn't get much attention in fanfic; probably because he's older and not as dorky-angsty as the rest of the cast. This is an interesting look at Paul and Ban's first few encounters, especially given certain spoilery events that take place late in the manga. Knowing something about Paul's history probably helps understand this story, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. "Gimme a coffee and the biggest thing I can get with whatever's left," he said, and pushed the money across the bar to Paul.
Paul took it, and began to count it slowly, looking at the boy more than the cash. Dark hair, blue eyes, same fucking grin, even - his son? He briefly wondered if Midou sent this kid as some sort of mind game. He wouldn't have put it past an expert of illusions.
The boy took the staring as some sort of challenge, and glared back through his purple lenses. untitled

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: Ban/Ginji, Rena, Paul, Natsumi Length: 1789 words Author on LJ: nekokoban Author Website: worldwalking :: (the sea of the soul) Why this must be read:
I enjoy a good relationship story told from an outsider's PoV, because you can learn a lot both about the characters under study, and the one observing them. As much as I love Ban and Ginji in this fic (dorks! giant dorks!), I really like how Rena's character is fleshed out through her interactions with the GetBackers, Natsumi, and Paul.
"Senpai," Rena says. "Are those two really friends?"
Natsumi looks up from the dishes; Rena is watching the GetBackers, on the other side of the cafe. They're squabbling over the last pieces of sushi from their last order, with Ginji clinging steadfastly to Ban's arm and ignoring the threats of leggo you damn eel before I skin you and they've been at that stalemate for nearly half an hour. No one else is in the cafe except for Paul in the back.
"Of course they're friends," Natsumi says. "Why wouldn't they be?" As Close As Defined

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: Ban & Ginji Length: One-shot Author on LJ: gisho Author Website: gisho Why this must be read:
This fic is the perfect example of why GetBackers holds a place in my heart: whether or not you slash them, Ban and Ginji's relationship is wonderful. They're best friends, and the warmth and depth of their relationship shines through brilliantly in this story.
He was fifteen when 'cigarettes' crept into the first spot, displacing 'food'. Cigarettes depressed the appetite. Besides, he was used to going hungry; nicotene cravings were new. They stayed there for almost five months.
Shortly afterwards there were two additions: gas for the car, and food for Ginji. The List

Hello, crack_van! It's been a long time since GetBackers was featured on crack_van. If you aren't already familiar with the fandom, I'd suggest you take a look at gisho's excellent fandom overview.
As gisho put it: "GetBackers has everything. Supernatural powers, futuristic technology, strange family traditions, witches, magicians, mad scientists, Dashing Adventures, Touching Moments, and more passionate male friendship than you can shake a stick at. Also, boobs."
Now you have to check out it, right? *g*
Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: Shido/Madoka Length: 425 words Author on LJ: incandescens Author Website: Get Backers Fanfic Page Why this must be read:
Shido/Madoka is one of my two GetBackers het OTPs. They're sweet, and absolutely adorable together. Unfortunately, it's hard to find much in the way of fanfic about them. I love their dynamic, and incandescens perfectly captures Madoka's quiet strength, and Shido's desperate need to protect her, even from himself.
He shifted his feet uncertainly. "Madoka," he started.
"Yes, Shido?"
"Doesn't this ever -- that is, don't I ever --"
She waited, hands folded politely in her lap.
His breathing speeded up. "You shouldn't let me stay," he said curtly. "I'm not safe."
"Well, of course you aren't," she agreed. acquainted with the night

Title: GETBACKERS Pairing: none Author: Rana Eros Author on LJ: ranaloreAuthor's Website: none Why this fic must be read: Because it's funny and sweet and gently revealing. Rana's own summary says it best: "Ban gets by with a lot of help from his friends." He's at his cranky, prickly best in this story, where he deals with the aftermath of a battle wound and Ginji, of course, bullies him into taking better care of himself. One of the things that attracts a lot of readers to GetBackers is the depth of the bond between its main characters, and that shines through wonderfully here. They have a dynamic all their own. As much as, like any two teenage boys, they endlessly give each other a hard time, at the end of the day they're the center of each other's worlds, and know it even if they'd never admit it to themselves. "Come on, Ban-chan." And Ginji gets out of the booth, taking Ban's sandwich with him. Ban opens his mouth to protest --loudly-- but Ginji's set his jaw and the look in his eyes is somewhere between pleading and commanding. Ban slaps his hand on the table in frustration, gets more pissed at the flash of pain.
"Fine." It's not in him to surrender gracefully, but he surrenders, stalking up the stairs with Ginji close enough on his heels to--
To catch him if he falls. And it's probably a point in Ginji's favor that it feels like too much effort to turn around and smack him for it.Fine is a Four-Letter Word

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: Kazuki/Toshiki Author on LJ: incandescensAuthor's Website: fanfic page; note also the drabble pageWhy this must be read:I would really like to red everything GB that Maya has ever written, but it's not quite practical, so I'm settling for this. It has eir trademark of stunningly beautiful, floaty prose - Maya is good, very very good, at conjurng up a precise mood. In this case, it's about Toshiki's path after Kazuki left, and his accompanying desperation. Kazuki is more than Toshiki is. Toshiki knows this. He doesn't dispute it. He wouldn't admire and respect Kazuki otherwise. Kazuki is like incense in church, like music in silence, like water in the desert to a thirsty man. Kazuki is richness to Toshiki's soul, food for Toshiki's need to be able to respect something outside himself, a pleasure for Toshiki to watch.
Kazuki is. And Toshiki doesn't know what he wants to ask him for, except that he wants something that Kazuki isn't giving him, and he can feel himself dying inside without it.The Language of Drought

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: none Author on LJ: archangelbethAuthor's Website: none Why this must be read: Because people in GetBackers keep talking about "professionalism" and this fic is a sterling example of Professionalism At Its Finest. Hevn gets short shrift in fandom - she's outwardly not very interesting, seeming to be something between a plot device and a stereotype - but once you take a little longer to look at her, she's just as fascinating as the main characters. And Akabane at his cheerful, bloody best is always worth a read. That would have been chilling, she decided as she blinked, if you didn't know that Doctor Jackal was a selective psychopath. It would have been more dangerous for her to be unconscious in the midst of a kindergarten; they'd have had permanent markers. Akabane wouldn't bother to torture an unconscious non-combatant. There was no test in it.untitled

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: none Author on LJ: zanzaforhireAuthor's Website: none Why this must be read: I'm very fond of this one because it plays into the same set of arcane theories on Akabane's background that I have. But that's far from its only good point; it also has that subtle, flavorful feeling that gives the best fics their distinctive mood. Not much actually happens in this story. It doesn't have to. Every night, at precisely midnight, he would step through the door and quietly claim a corner booth in the back. The order, too, never varied — one small pot of tea, freshly brewed rather than bagged, no sugar, just milk. He would pour the milk into the cup before the tea then sit there sipping it slowly, drawing out the experience, hands cradled around the warmth of the cup. The only thing that ever kept him away was an assignment, and he seemed to savor the next night’s cup that much more for it.Man of Mystery

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: none Author on LJ: xskadiAuthor's Website: none Why this must be read: Despite how short this is, it's beautiful. There's not a lot of good fic out there with Clayman, but her past has a lot of potential. This is a thoughtful and well-woven glance at it. "You'll have to come back later," she says, peering up at the visitors. "Mother is in her Impressionist phase."Sunset Over the Tenements

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: Natsumi/Ban Author on LJ: jmtorresAuthor's Website: none Why this must be read: Because it's fun to torture Ban! And he should have known better, really. This fic is anime-verse, set shortly after Episode 26 - if you're a manga reader, that's the anime version of the Hot Springs Episode; in that version Paul and Natsumi drag themselves to the resort with Ban and Ginji, and Natsumi proceeeds to beat everyone's ass at table tennis. She bets Paul a payraise and wins three times, then she bets Ban a month of lunches vs. "whatever you want". This was perhaps ill-advised on Ban's part. Hee heee. "Why this?" Ban asked.
Natsumi's face emerged as she finished towelling her hair off. She unbelted the white bathrobe the hotel had provided. "Hevn-san said you had a forked tongue."
Ban blinked. "She meant I lie. All the time."(untitled)

GetBackers has everything. Supernatural powers, futuristic technology, strange family traditions, witches, magicians, mad scientists, Dashing Adventures, Touching Moments, and more passionate male friendship than you can shake a stick at. Also, boobs. It follows two young men, Ginji and Ban, as they stuggle to do their job, actually get paid, make sense of their lives, help out old friends, and avoid old enemies, in a Tokyo that isn't quite the one we know. It's utterly madcap. It has more twists than a Slinky. And it alternately makes you laugh aloud and sniffle with sympathy. Come on, who wouldn't want to read the only shonen manga in existance to include a canonical mpreg joke? ( Who are these people, and what are they doing in my coffeeshop? )
