Why this must be read:
This is second only to - well, to another fic by the same author with a collaborator, "Written", in terms of a complex, believable plot that pulls you in. The story involves a very unusual ... anamoly that appears in Mugenjou, that Makubex has to deal with. The writing is rather workaday, but this isn't the sort of fic one reads for the sterling beauty of well-placed words - it's one you read for the thick, complex, fascinating plot.
Oh, and the vey nicely done characterizations. And the quiet but stern rhythym of the scenes as they pass by one by one, inevitably. And the way that Spooks actually pays attention to the details of the way the world works.
That was new. Of course, the Anomaly hadn’t stayed so long before. Three bodies and four erased. Makubex changed camera angles and panned in. He could see shapes in the iced blood where four bodies, twisted and broken, had fallen. Or been thrown. Whatever, semantics. Just as before, the bodies of the four virtual-born were just . . . gone.
Sakura stood up and left the room. Her footsteps were uneven and rushed.
Makubex kept focusing. Details. Logic. Don’t think about seven people dead.
