The Miracle Worker by Mere G. (PG-13)
Fandom: ROSWELL
Pairing: Max/Valenti
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:
I always thought of Jim Valenti as sort of the 'Giles' of Roswell-- if Giles had spent the entire first season trying to hunt Buffy down like a dog. Later on, Valenti realized that the alien kids of Roswell needed his help more than they needed to be exposed and dissected, and being an honorable man, he then became their protector and supporter. He was a brave man, a devoted father, but still flawed and very human, and I feel that he's a neglected character in Roswell 'fic. Pairing aside, though, this story sends shivers up my spine with its deft and delicate unpinning of Jim's backstory.
I suppose this story doesn't make a lot of sense. There should have been warning signs, or some kind of vague foreshadowing. I should have noticed Max the first time I saw him and not known exactly why, or I should have had a crush on a dark-eyed kid back in high school, or I should have always been fixated on aliens. I should have realized something was off. But I think any of that would just have diminished what is now.
