Fandom: GREY'S ANATOMY Pairing: Izzie Stevens character study Author on LJ: fox1013Author Website: http://www.innergeekdom.net/ Why this must be read: I was surprised when I realized I had yet to rec this. It's such a wonderful and interesting concept and really shows two different 'worlds' coming together well. Very unusual and very good. Excerpt: George was shy, and geeky, and easily embarrassed, and sometimes when Izzie looked at him she could only see Alex, her Alex, and had to walk away.Breaking

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Jim Valenti; Kyle Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Dark LabrynthWhy this must be read: This story gives insight into what was going through the sheriff’s head when Kyle was shot. Some of his memories are heartbreaking, so here there be angst, gang. Excerpt: Kyle was 8. In fact, it was his eighth birthday. He sat at the kitchen table, the model airplane box in front of him. His eyes were bright and he beamed up at his father.
"You're gonna help me put it together, right dad?" he asked excitedly.
"Uh yeah," Jim replied, looking at the gift one of his deputies had picked up at his request. He probably should have asked what it was before he gave it to Kyle. At least then he'd have been prepared. But, like always, he had been too busy to be concerned with it. Besides, there would always be other birthdays.Priorities

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Kyle Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Debbie’s Fanfiction CollectionWhy this must be read: A confrontation between Max and Kyle turns physical. Yes, that way and that way. First it’s about Liz, but then those homoerotic tendencies start to pop up and stuff gets real interesting. And, of course, alien fun is had. A tease: Coming back into himself in a rush, Max suddenly felt that perhaps he was prying, seeing so much of Kyle's private thoughts, and he made a deliberate effort to close his mental channel down. "Don't." Kyle gasped. Enlightenment part I & II

The opening is reason enough to download at least the low quality version (of course, I’d recommend the high quality version more). It shows all the conventional ‘ships like Michael/Maria, Max/Liz, and Isabel/Alex, but it doesn’t forget the other characters like Kyle, Tess, and Sheriff Valenti. Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Kyle/Original Character; Kyle/Max Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: This fic is a detailed description of Kyle’s first time with his wrestling teammate, Rich. Plus, it mentions his unresolved feelings for Max. This fic is sexy, realistic, and you should read it ;) Excerpt: I was starting to panic, wondering what he'd think and how I could explain. I felt his hold on me loosen as he moved the hand that was underneath me. I took that to mean he had noticed and was trying to get away from me in disgust....But I'm Captain of the Football Team

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Kyle/Max; Kyle/Max/Michael Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: MattslashWhy this must be read: Mere words cannot express how much I love this fic. If you’re a fan of Roswell slash you simply must read this. Hell, even if you’ve never seen the show, you should still read this. No prior knowledge of the Roswell fandom is needed to understand this fic (or the hot smutty smut). Read read read it. And then go back and re-read it, because it’s that good. Excerpt: "Well, Dad, if you'd gotten here two minutes ago you would have seen me lying on the floor bleeding to death with major internal organ damage, but then Fucking Max Evans played Jesus Christ and now I'm fine, so nothing to worry about as long as these handprints fade."Roslove - 3 parts

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Kyle Author on LJ: unkown Author Website: unkown Why this must be read: This is an AU (alternate universe) where in the pilot episode Kyle is shot instead of Liz. excerpt: When Kyle was seven, he tripped over his dog's chewtoy and fell through a glass door. Four hours and twenty-nine stitches later, he lay under the chilled white sheets of his hospital bed and cried himself to sleep. He didn't think he'd ever be in that much pain again.
Nine years later, he was proven wrong. He felt the solid impact of the bullet tunnel into his back and throw him forward. His ears were ringing with the report, but he saw Liz's mouth open in a horrified scream, and then the white-hot agonies twisted through his body. He dove for unconsciousness, greedily seeking a relief from the pain. ( A warning I think is important, but spoilerific... )The Genesis Series: 5 parts

Fandom: Roswell Pairing: Kyle/Max Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: Sweet Uncleanness Why this must be read: The author takes a traumatic event in Max's life and spins out this story of hilarity. I'm especially in love with Kyle in this, but then again, I'm admittedly biased. Redrawing the Lines

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Various Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: http://www.roswellunderground.comWhy this must be read:This series was somewhat controversial during the Roswell Fandom heyday - not for the boundaries it pushed, or for the raunchiness, or anything like that. But for the way it represented the characters - not as fifteen year old teenagers, but as ten year old children. Growing up together, dealing with their growing alien powers, human children trying to reconcile the differences of those children. Mostly it was cutesy, but it was interesting, too, and one of those things that everyone had an opinion on. It created its own terms (like 'foof' and 'dove'), and was, for better or worse, one of the essential parts of the Roswell Fannish Experience. Just then, Maria spotted Alex Whitman. They had grown very close last year when they were in the same class, because Maria had been separated from Liz.
Now she wasn't sure what to do. Could she still be friends with Alex this year now that they were all in the same class? She hoped so. She really wanted Liz to like Alex. She wanted them all to be friends. She was always talking to Liz about how cool Alex was. He better not blow it!

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Michael/Maria Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: again, unknown Why this must be read:You know all those fics where there are sparks between person a and person b? How they're fiery and passionate and you can see the tension? (those two sentences were slightly sardonic voice) This fic, although there are sparks, is not one of those fic. When Maria and Michael touch, there are literally sparks. And they want to make them. They want to touch each other and make the sparks, and it is one long allegory about teenagers and uncontrollable hormones in a distinctly alien way. The characterisation is wonderful - Isabel is just right, bossy and in control, and Liz is perfect, and over all this is a lovely, moderate length fic with some enjoyable plot and in character dialogue. I give it four and a half out of five crack vans. ( an exerpt )"What?" Isabel responded through gritted teeth. Glad you stuck to that no touching rule, Maria, she thought. God! Didn't anyone else know the meaning of self-control?

Fandom: ROSWELL/THE LAST UNICORN Pairing: Maria/Michael, Liz/Max, Max/Tess, Michael/Isabel, Alex/Isabel, Liz/Kyle Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: n/a Why this must be read:Short Answer: because it's a crossover with The Last Unicorn. Long Answer: Cotti wrote some of the most beautiful, heartbreaking Roswell-Angst, back in the days when it was a cool thing to do. Angst in Roswell is basically an obvious thing - they're aliens, and the government is after them. And they're teenagers. What more do you need? But Dreams of Unicorns was more than just that. It involved, to a small extent, the teen themes and the conspiracy theory, but was mostly about that need to move on, and that sadness, that I remember from The Last Unicorn. just a note, though: it's not the most well executed of fics, but I think it still holds up well, regardless. Hi, I'm Stephanie, and I'll be your Roswell driver this month. Roswell was a really big deal for me - it wasn't my first fandom, or the first time I wrote, or anything like that, but it was certainly the fandom where I did the most growing, and I'm far more attached to it than any of the others - even the ones I'm active in now. And I'm going to try really hard to give a broad overview of the entire fandom, not just stick to my little corner. Anyway:Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: michael/maria Author on LJ: indirajamesAuthor Website: n/a Why this must be read:It's short, so it won't take you long to read. Unlike most short pieces, it's not a character piece, it's barely-there Roswell Poetry. (not in a bad way) Maria and Michael were always about living and dying and being afraid (and, incidently, not being afraid), and, roundabout as that is, that is what this is about. And it's not that it's a great introduction to Roswell, and it's not indicative of the other things I'll be recommending this month, but it's a beautiful slide in. "Memories, all at once deadly, kiss their way over his face, and he sleeps despite his fears."

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Nasedo Max Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:As a character sketch of the enigmatic shape-shifter, Nasedo, this is a good story. Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Michael Author on LJ: N/A Author Website:N/A Warnings: This story has overtones of incest, so beware. Why this must be read:Few Max/Michael stories actually delve into the fraternal side of the relationship, even though, canonically, Max and Michael often read as boys suffering from a serious case of sibling rivalry. *g* That's one of the reasons why I find this story so compelling. It doesn't shy away from the fact that Max and Michael probably thought of each other as siblings for most of their lives. It actually makes that connection the focus of Michael's thoughts about his relationship with Max. Aside from the slash, there is also some lovely character analysis in this story, in the way that Michael provides what he knows Max needs while knowing that it is near impossible for Max to admit that he needs anything at all. So he waits for Max to get over the guilt and the shame after each of their encounters, because he knows Max will always come back. Brother

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: None Author on LJ: moonwhipAuthor Website: moonwhip.netWhy this must be read:Let's try a list, shall we? -It's funny. -It's funny fic from a writer who does heart-wrenching angst really, really well. -It's funny fic, from a writer who does heart-wrenching angst really, really well... about Kyle becoming a Buddhist. This is a glimpse of Kyle during the season one hiatus that slyly attempts to answer that most holy of Roswell mysteries: exactly how did the one-dimensional jock we used to know become the character we all loved on season two? The Japanese stuff, in particular -- some of the koan seemed pretty damn pointless, like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" Maybe the lesson would've seemed more valuable if he hadn't had a friend on the team who had weird joints and could make one hand clap. True Confessions Of A Buddhist Jock

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: N/A Author on LJ: uhmidont Author Website: fic-o-ramaWhy this must be read: In retrospect, this is Michael-fic week for me at crack_van. Of all the Michael-centric fics I could recommend, none capture the character as well as this lovely piece by Elizabeth. Frankly, I was surprised not to find it among the recs in the memories. This is a Michael future-fic in which he looks back at the relationships that have had an impact on his life. It runs the gamut of his attachments and covers the ties he had to practically every character on the show. As all of Elizabeth's stories, this is beautifully written, but what makes it stand out for me is the way in which she portrays Michael looking back over his life and making all those connections that might have escaped him in the moment. This is a subtle and incisive look into all that makes Michael Guerin who he is, wrapped in an analogy that would make any classics fan happy. *g* Three is a number he is familiar with. It seems to have figured prominently in his life--all the patterns of it are clearer to him now that he's lived a larger part of it. Three isn't a bad number or a good number. It's just a number, but it's his number. He almost got a tattoo of it once, but in the end decided that it was already on him in so many ways that marking it wasn't really necessary. Besides, he'd never really liked needles all that much. Moerae

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Michael/Liz, Michael/Maria Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:This is a Michael POV in which he thinks about being an alien and finds out how human he really is. It focuses on Liz but it's really about all of Michael's relationships, much more a gen story than a romantic one. The prose is simple and precise and has a flow to it that leads the story forward. It reads almost like poetry. In short, it is a lovely and beautifully written story. You always said hi to me. In fifty years, if I remember nothing else, I think I'll remember that. No one else in the world gave a damn about me, except Max and Izzy, and if they'd really been the humans they wished they were, I think they might not have cared either. Words, Unspoken

Title: You're a Souvenir, a Darling, Dear by Scynneh Pairing: Angelus/Rath Author on LJ: transtemptsAuthor Website: Transylvanian TemptationsWhy this must be read:The writer summarizes this as "the essential meeting-fic" and in many ways it is. Naughty (and downright evil) alter-egos of favorite characters colliding in a dark alley is about as much of a plot as you will find in this story. (Should you need a refresher on the Roswell doubles I direct you to the excellent primer; just look under "Dupes") There's a total disregard for time-lines, but that is more than compensated by the incisive Angelus characterization that is glimpsed through the insanely hot encounter between the boys. The title of this story alone was enough to make me read it, but if you need more, here is a sample: His latent homosexuality may have been obvious, but he was scared as hell and wasn't going to do anything about it. Never mind that there were no relationships; he lived to be ninety for God's sake. He must have really been afraid of dying to live half a century longer than the average life expectancy. You're a Souvenir, a Darling, Dear

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: various Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read: One of the joys that is unique to fandom, I think, is seeing one story spark another with any degree of immediacy. This series began with one writer wanting to expand on the ideas explored by another and I think that makes it a joy to read. There is a sense of build-up throughout the series and Marianna's 'Max to the Max' more than delivers on the promise of its predecessors. Increasingly dark and twisted, yet every shade of hot, this series is one of my favorite Roswell reads. These are all fairly dark takes on the Roswell universe following "Destiny": Peppermint Illusions by Laure Alexander - In which Liz discovers cold comfort. Hard Candy by Shimi - In which we get Nasedo's take on things. Chocolate Promises by Mala - In which some ideas are blown right out of the water. Max to the Max by Marianna - In which the object of desire finally gets his say. (Series link will take you to Laure's Roswell fic page, scroll to the bottom for individual story links.) Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Liz Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:This is a series of post-Destiny Max/Liz stories. While the entire fandom tried to envision what things would be like following the season one finale, these have always stood out for me. Mostly because Maggie's beautiful writing, which is concise and evocative, makes these a pleasure to read regardless of 'shipping tendencies. "Fade" and "Breathe" are companion pieces from Max's and Liz's points of view. "Resurrection" continues the story. The epilogue, "Touch", is not to be missed. Sad, and hot, and hopeful. "I guess it's like this: I know what the sun feels like, and now that it's gone, I will fade. Slowly, very slowly, I will fade." - Fade FadeBreatheResurrectionTouch

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Various Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:Looking over last week's recs I realized that they were all very short stories, so this week I'll be linking up some series. First up, the "Angst and Perversity in Four Movements" series: "The Message" by Whirling Girl "Twist" by Shimi "Undone" by Marianna "Breathe. Eyes. Memory" by Elizabeth This is a series of four short stories based on a clip from the second season promo, in which Tess, Isabel, and Maria are dancing in The Crashdown. The stories are different interpretations of the brief clip. Each story can stand alone but read as the responses from four very good and very different writers to the same challenge they are even more interesting. Angst and Perversity in Four Movements
|
Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: None Author on LJ: uhmidontAuthor Website: Fic-o-ramaWhy this must be read:One of the most interesting periods in the show came after Alex's death. The characters were suddenly polarized into every kind of faction and sub-faction and the tension between all the groups was the stuff great fic is made of. In the midst of all this turmoil, Liz, particularly, was left on the outside. Her conviction that Alex's death had involved some kind of alien foul play was the catalyst for the splintering of what had always been an uneasy alliance between the humans and the aliens on the show. In "Babel" Elizabeth takes all these complicated relationships and explores them through Michael's eyes, his need for answers, and his realization that what you want the most can come at a price you're unprepared to pay. "Do you know what this means?" Maria asks and her voice is small and low and soft. He knows that if he looks over at her there will be tears starting to form in her eyes.
"It means they can go home," Liz says.
He looks in the rearview mirror. Liz is sitting in the backseat, neatly buckled in, restrained. She is smiling. Her teeth are white, sharp-looking.
He looks back at the road. Babel

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Kyle Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:"But he told himself that he couldn't take his eyes off the two of them because he was attracted to Tess. And he had to be. Because if he wasn't attracted to Tess, he would be attracted to Max."That pretty much says it all. This is a Season one Kyle characterization that I just love. Aware of his own conflict and yet, refusing to deal. This story is short, sharp, and has a thread of slyness running through it, a smirking tone that makes me smile. It also leaves me saying "lots of girls, lots of girls" in head every time I read it. Lots of Girls

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Liz, Liz and a gun Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:In the first promos for Season 3, the producers of Roswell teased us all with a clip in which Liz is holding a gun. This is speculation fic that takes that image and runs with it. The story delivers far better than the show itself ever did. Maggie creates a Liz in this story that has found a way to regain control, and gives us a glimpse into who the character could have become. Lyrical and dreamy, the story has a wonderful surreal feel that only emphasizes its disturbing premise. It's always cold at first, but quickly warms in my hand, becoming familiar, balanced. It's a part of me, the same temperature as my skin, the same temper as my heart. Target Practice

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Michael and Maria Author on LJ: bitchygurlAuthor Website: http://www.fangurl.com/Why this must be read:I've been here almost a month and I haven't recced an M&M fic, which just will not do. So I pulled outta the proverbial hat this little gem, one of the few Roswell fics that I can read multiple times and still enjoy like it was the first time I'd ever read it. Loki has such a deft touch with the characters and understands both Michael and Maria perfectly, which shines through in her fiction. I highly reccommend this story! Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Michael/Max Author on LJ: uhmidontAuthor Website: http://www.ficorama.net/Why this must be read: Michael, Max, and missing scenes from VLV and ARCC. Yes, it's my second Elizabeth rec this month, but the woman writes such incredible Roswell pieces that it's nearly impossible *not* to rec her. Hell, I could probably fill an entire month of Roswell recs just by using her stuff! ;) This one's Michael/Max, in keeping with my theme from last time. And it's really incredible how she gets into their heads, especially Michael's, and really makes you *feel* these characters. Also wonderful about this one is how she spins time on its head and takes what could have been a really good but rather plain story and gives it a twist, making it seem fresh because you have to follow the characters and events backwards, mind forced to jump ahead and guess at what happened before you actually get there. It works really well here, giving the story that right amount of edge that you need to make Michael/Max fic really ring true. ( Here is a snippit... )Days of Grace

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: (Max/Michael-ish) Author on LJ: scoutmolAuthor Website: http://www.slumberwalk.com/curiosityslowdown/Why this must be read:It's a spot-on Michael POV and it does a spectacular job of showcasing just what makes the Max/Michael relationship so interesting. Of all the Roswell slash pairings, Max/Michael has always been my favorite and this is one of the best M/Mi fics I've found anywhere, even though it's pre-slash. Nobody gets with the groiny here, but don't let that stop you from reading! Set just after the season 2 episode "Max in the City" (i.e. part two of the Dupes storyline), this coda features Michael and Max talking after Max's return to Roswell. They say nothing while saying everything in that way that they've always had on the show and it just really rings true. Snippit:Michael tosses the laundry into the bathroom. "You all right, Maxwell?"
Max opens his eyes. "I'm fine."
Michael nods and thinks: Of course he's fine. Max could have a gaping flesh wound and be fine. He's always fine.
There's a silence.
But it's okay, Michael knows. Quiet with Max is okay, it's always been, and he likes that. When there's nothing to say -- or maybe too much, and just no jumping off point -- nothing needs to be said at all. Max always rolled out the bedroll at the foot of his bed in silence for him, Michael remembers. Always handed half of his lunch over without a word.Breathe AgainSadly, I have no clue as to the website URL or LJ username of the author.
