"UNCLE Comes To Mayberry" by Nataliya (G)

So here I am, back for another month.  Would you believe I was nervous that all the good stories have been recommended already? So I started a database of Man From UNCLE stories on the web in order to see what is out there. I haven't looked at the big archive sites yet like Chrome and GunMetal, File 40 and  others and I've already indexed over 500 stories!

I thought I'd start with something light this month. It's a cross-over in which Napoleon and Illya are helped by Sheriff Andy Taylor with the noble "assistance" of Barney Fife.

Why this must be read:
Nataliya gets the Mayberry cast just right, and fits Illya and Napoleon into the scene without the two of them ever breaking character.  Even more impressive to me, she keeps the story serious. It never turns into a farce or parody, but remains a loving homage to a show of our youth.

Barney took hold of his friend's shoulders and looked into his eyes. "Andy, prepare yourself for a shock!"

Andy slumped. "Barney, will ya just tell me?"

The deputy glanced left and right in the vacant room, and leaned in confidentially. "There's Russian spies headin' into Mayberry!"

Andy nodded slowly. "Russian spies, huh? How do you know that?"

"Because the one fella said to the other, 'You clever Russian.'" He thought to himself for a minute. "Come to think of it, though, that fella didn't sound Russian."

"Maybe they think we got some intercontinental ballistic missiles hidden in Vernon Kelsey's barn."

"Andy, I'm tellin' ya, they were stopped out there on the highway and talkin' into a fancy fountain pen!"

"What were they sayin'?

"Some kinda weird code, somethin' about Channel D." Barney frowned. "What do you suppose 'D' stands for?"

Thank you for the rec! I just stumbled upon it. Yes, this story is not my usual style but I loved The Andy Griffith Show and really enjoyed writing the characters. In fact, they took over and NS and IK became bystanders. I don't think you have to be a first cousin to appreciate the citizens of Mayberry since this show is still seen so much on cable TV today.

Thank you all for the great feedback!
