Why this must be read: This is one of my all-time favorite AUs. 16 chapters of "a wee little space opera in the classic style, with added Hobbity goodness", as Pip puts it. It has the special factor of being set before the events depicted in Billy's awesome short film 'Sniper 470'. It's a fully fleshed-out science fiction saga, with wars, villains, and space ships - and, of course, a beautiful pair of lovers at the center.

Dom always missed zero gravity by the time he reached the residential core of Armstrong Station. They'd built it in such a way that the spaces where people would spend the most time approximated Earth gravity, for health reasons as much as anything else. It wasn't good for the human body to spend too long in zero-g: eventually it would adapt so much that it could no longer tolerate the stress of a one-g environment. It happened to people in the ASDF from time to time; Billy had told Dom chilling stories of gunners who stayed on a little too long at their stations and died in horrible pain within hours of being returned to full-Earth gravity. It was one of the reasons Billy was getting leave at all, Dom knew. He had maybe a month before he'd have to come home, one way or the other, and the longer they put it off, the longer he'd have to stay planetside to build up his strength again and the more it would hurt when he did. He'd already confided to Dom that he expected he'd be spending a few days in sickbay being shot full of stimulants. Dom had returned a gentle message that he needn't worry and would be well taken care of if need be.
