No Little Charity by Perspi (PG-13)
And now for something completely a little different.
Hiya.
bironic here, taking the wheel for HOUSE M.D. from the capable hands of
queenzulu. The theme for most of this month's recs is 'stories that do something slightly out of the ordinary.' I'll be picking out fics that use unusual structure or narrative techniques, take a unique angle, tackle topics you don't see much in the fandom, and/or have a little sci fi or fantasy sprinkled in. There'll be lots of House/Wilson friendship and slash, because that's what I read most.
First up:
Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: House/Wilson friendship

Why this must be read: You know how they say great science fiction and fantasy sheds light on who we are here and now and what it means to be human?
perspi's "No Little Charity" uses just a smidgen of whimsy—Wilson learns a magic spell that allows him to take on House's pain—to hold a lens up to a very real House and Wilson and their complex friendship. Who is House without his damaged leg and chronic pain? Would he be grateful if someone took away his pain, or would he want it back? How much is Wilson willing to sacrifice of himself if it means saving his friend? Would Wilson really do better at managing pain than House if he were the one who had to live with the infarction damage? Spanning about a year in the course of its nine chapters, this story deftly tackles these and other questions with exquisite characterization and dialogue and a range of emotions as Wilson learns to cope with debilitating pain, House readjusts to "normal" life even as he hounds Wilson to give him his pain back, they learn about themselves and each other, and the two struggle to find their footing in their altered friendship.
Though "No Little Charity" centers on Wilson and House, all the main characters from Cuddy and the fellows to Stacy make appearances. Cuddy in particular is vibrantly drawn, her voice lifting off the page.
perspi also does a fine job with the original female character who supplies the magic, giving us just enough that she's more than a convenient catalyst but not going overboard until she's a distraction, and there's even a pair of face-smackingly moronic clinic patients.

Excerpt:
"I don't need you to take care of me!" Wilson shouted. "I'm not fragile, I'm not feeble, I'm just—"
"Crippled," House growled.
"I'm no different than you used to be!"
"With the little white pills your new best friends?"
"No, they were your best friends, and now you miss them, don't you?"
"This isn't yours. I want it back." House took a step toward Wilson.
"You only want it back because the pain and the drugs keep you from facing the things you don't like about yourself," Wilson snarled. "With me gone, you'll have to face yourself; you'll have time to think, and you're afraid."
"I've had about enough of your—"
"Being a cripple made you special. You're afraid of who you are without it."
