There’s a well-known theory about universes running in parallel - that every decision made or not made, every action taken or not taken creates, in effect, its own world, with paths leading off at every juncture. Infinite possibilities, almost close enough to touch, but what passes for us, our consciousness, getting to experience only one out of all of them.
Why this must be read: This is just a brilliantly conceived and executed story playing with the idea outlined in the excerpt above about the existence of countless coexisting parallel universes. House flips a coin, creating universe after universe, argues with Wilson, and then wakes up in one of those alternate universes, where he discovers (among other differences) that he and Wilson have been sleeping together. We are invited to wonder if we're witnessing "our" House slip into this alternate universe into which he's been dropped, or whether AU House has been dreaming of our universe and is now remembering his own reality. (There is an answer of sorts at the end, but I won't spoil it.) From the awkward friendship still recovering from the events of "No Reason" and early Season Three in the "canon" universe to the tender sexual relationship and alternate recent history depicted in the AU,
daasgrrl presents a well-characterized and well-written puzzle of a story that's at once intriguing, insightful, forlorn, hopeful, and full of possibilities.
