Why this must be read: Set between Elizabeth's discovery of Norrington in Tortuga until Will’s return on the Isle Cruces, “Requiem” focuses on the love/hate relationship of James and Elizabeth. There is a brutal honesty between them, with leads to anger and scorn but also to a greater familiarity and understanding than either could have with any other.

artic_fox makes an affair between the two while on the Black Pearl entirely plausible within canon—and this added plot point throws James’s subsequent actions into an entirely new light. “Requiem” also includes some of my favorite sexual imagery found within this fandom, as James realizes that they have both lost too much self-control for his previous fantasies about what it would be like to bed Elizabeth to have anything to do with their present reality.
