Pomegranate Seeds by Tenebraeli [G]
Hey, everybody. I'm Sarah, and I'll be driving the Doctor Who van this month. Alas, I am a n00b who has mostly just seen the new series, but I will try and make sure I rec something for everyone. :D
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: None, although I think you could read Doctor/Rose into it
Author on LJ:
tenebraeli
Author Website: Fan Fic Annex
Why this must be read: This was written just after New Earth, and yet Tenebraeli nails one of the central themes of the series. It foreshadows the end of the series before the show even does, and has lovely characterization of both Rose and the Tenth Doctor.
But now, they are talking, walking and talking, and as she fingers some scarves on display, marveling at the weightlessness of them, he goes on to talk about the Face of Boe. And it's then that he tells her what the Novice told him. How the Face was waiting to give a message to someone, the man without a home, the lonely god.
At that, she turns to him, smiling, almost laughing, because he's gone out of his way to keep people from calling him a 'god' before, and she wants to tease him now. Then she sees his eyes. And she understands. That thread of memory from school comes back, something about the gods of old Rome or Greece, and the humans that had dealings with them.
Even though Timopolis V has two suns, and the heat shimmers off the pavement and makes the buildings in the distance wavy... she is cold. And as the weightless scarf slips from her fingers, as he takes her arm and they proceed down the row of booths, she doesn't hear the cry of the birds, or feel the warm breeze.
Because she knows now that he has stopped fighting the label of 'god'. He has embraced it.
