Why this must be read: Pretty much by the “promise of redemption” line in DMC, I knew James wasn’t making it out of this trilogy alive. Luckily for James (and fic writers), however, pirates seem to come back to life more often than X-Men.

kayliemalinza imagines just what James’s afterlife would be like. I had to read this fic twice through before I realized just what happened in this story. My reaction was: “Oh. Oh.” James is stuck in a Davy Jones Locker-esque purgatory, where he is repeatedly killed—six times over, in fact--by those he cares about most. When they finally and unexpectedly come for him, James even doubts he can be rescued.
