Said the Spider by Fialka (PG-ish)

Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: none/gen - Aeryn Sun, Scorpius
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fialka
Author Website: The Candybox
Why this must be read:

From day one, the relationship between Aeryn Sun and John Crichton was always complicated; and never more so than during the bleak, angst-ridden first half of season four. Fialka's dark fairy-tale appropriates characters from nursery rhyme, fits them effortlessly with new symbolism and weaves around them a story of desperation, fear, and betrayal.

Fi's story builds on the events of 4.05 Promises and 4.07 John Quixote in a richly textured, complex fic full of obsession, manipulation and nuance - until the final few lines deliver a jaw-dropping coup de grĂ¢ce.

"You and I are in agreement," the spider tells the fly.

The fly is not a fly, of course. It's only the coat that makes the dark woman look as if she might fly off at any moment. The coat and the waves of fear and impatience that radiate from her.

Remarkably, she holds her ground. You'd almost never notice.

The spider notices, of course. It's how he survives. He circles behind the fly, close enough to rustle the edges of the long coat. Close enough to smell her. Fear has an unpleasant odour and despite a commonly held belief among those he will never consider quite his kind -- for of course there are no others -- he does not normally relish its scent.

This one though -- the more frightened she is, the more she smells of battle pheromones. Battle and a faint hint of desire, a readiness for sex. The sex pheromone is stronger than usual; she's been on command with John.
