Why this must be read:
1. Cheat on your wife with your best friend. Tell yourself it's only because you don't want to die alone. Wonder how you got to a point in your marriage where you feel alone at all.
2. Move halfway across the galaxy. Promise yourself that you won't think about Julian. Smile and congratulate him when he tells you he's in love with Ezri. Remind yourself that your wife is beautiful, the way she looks when she steps out of the shower, all glistening. Hold Julian in your head like a holophoto and think of him while you jerk off after work.
Mosca is great, and the format (a second-person list) is original and very effective. This is one of those "Five Things That Never Happened To..." fics, the first DS9 one of the "sub-genre", in fact. When the series ended it messed up our fanfic potential by sending the characters all over the place, so it's always interesting (and a central aspect of the fandom)to take a look at what happened to them after the Dominion War was over. Miles and Keiko went back to Earth with their kids, but in Mosca's version their domestic bliss is short-lived. It's an excellent display of the subtexts at play in DS9 fanon (some might say canon, even), and personally it stands as my favourite fic exploration of my favourite character. Because who doesn't love Miles O'Brien?
