This is a nice, long, meaty case story set pre-series. What's more, it's got wonderful character development and nifty psychological tension as well. Plus some titillating - and unique - insight into what exactly went wrong in Hutch's marriage to Vanessa. Unusual for this fandom, Van is actually presented as a fully fleshed human being.
But really, the story is about Starsky and his relationship with Hutch. And Starsky's background. And his family, and all sorts of other juicy details that you can't afford to miss.
