The Bitch by stele3 (NC-17)

Why this must be read: After the episode Folsom Prison Blues, there were a number of episodic stories about Sam and Dean in prison, some better than others. Though it doesn't exactly follow on from Folsom Prison Blues, I really like this one best.
In the yard, Meaty grabbed Sam's hair, pulling his head up and back, crouching low and saying something, something that had Sam's eyes lock on Dean's.
Ten seconds later Meaty was facedown on the dirt, out cold.
"Sonofa..." Lackey #1 muttered, his grip on Dean loosening enough for Dean throw him off. He spun and planted a knee the Lackey #1's groin, then threw an elbow into #2's face. The groan and crack of their wounds made him feel just slightly better about the whole experience. But not by much.
Sam sat on the ground, elbows resting on his knees, panting. He squinted up at Dean with one eye, the other already swelling shut.
"Hey," Dean said, his voice sticking to his throat.
"Hey," Sam croaked, "dude, I think I just won you as my prison bitch."
Stele3 (who has since moved to Greatest Journal) is an extremely talented writer with an excellent feel for dialogue and emotion. She blends drama, humor and angst with a deftness that makes me frankly jealous of her skill and she has her finger on the pulse of both the cadence of Sam and Dean's voices and the Americana that make Supernatural what it is.
But more than that, what made me rec this specific piece is the role reversal here and the effect it has on the brothers. Throughout much of the series (and the preseries history), it's been Dean's stated function to take care of Sam. In this, Sam is placed in the new and uncomfortable position of being Dean's protector and the way this pushes them apart, brings them together and completely changes them is a sweet, hot, fascinating read.

I was reluctant to check since I worried it'd be one of those "Dean's a broken little prison bitch" stories or something. Boy am I glad I took a chance ;D
