Duet, with Brief Interlude for Trio by JS Cavalcante
Hi all,
I'm driving the due South rec van for November, and since it's my second time at the wheel of this particular fandom I'm going to do my best to throw the headlights on a wider variety of fic. I'll be focusing on newer stories, undiscovered gems and authors who haven't yet been rec'd on the CV. (See? I am young and hip and I make with the acronyms!)
I tend to like Fraser/Kowalski stories but, like the Man himself, I'll try anything once. Expect a mix of long dramatic stories, sweet and short one-shots, and everything in between. It's going to be a fun month here in the dS lot after a looooong dry spell. I hope you'll discover something new or reread an old favourite. As always, please remember to let an author know when you encounter something you like. Feedback is the gas that keeps the fandom engine going, so don't be afraid to make contact and tell someone you like her work. Authors tend to be pretty receptive to that kind of thing.
Alright! On with the first rec!

Why this must be read:
When
j_s_cavalcante posted this achingly sweet and tender threesome fic last Christmas for
ds_seekritsanta it seemed to slip through the cracks, and I think it's still one of her least-read stories. While Ray/Ray fics are starting to gain in popularity and more new authors are taking on Fraser/Vecchio, the Holy Trio is still something of a shadowy figure in the fandom, present but not often tackled. Part of the reason threesomes are rarely written in this fandom might be the heavy lifting required to get all three of these guys (each with their own complex interpersonal histories) together in the same bed.
JS tackles that issue head-on in this story about holiday generosity, friendship and forgiveness, and she spends a significant amount of time ironing out the motivations behind each guy's actions and decisions. JS isn't afraid to delve into Kowalski and Vecchio's relationship with Stella, and she turns the Wife of Many Rays into a fully-formed character with her own set of complexities and motivations even though she doesn't actually appear in the story. And anyone who gives good Stella is okay in my books.
Anyway, the key word for this story is "complex." Complex emotions, complex physical acts, complex situation. This is one of the few threesome stories I've read that deals with the emotional and psychological subtleties of a threesome pairing before delving into the sex, and I think it's a fic that offers just as much insight into Fraser, Kowalski and Vecchio as it does sex and heat and heart-twisty goodness. Don't believe me?
Ray Vecchio slowly surrendered his free hand, letting Ray's long fingers twine around his.
"That's good," Ray said. "Yeah, that's real good." He stroked the back of Ray Vecchio's hand with his thumb.
"See, I've always liked girls so much I never really looked at guys," said Ray Vecchio, "but in Vegas I learned not to take the good things in life for granted." He swallowed. "Two friends who want to make me feel good--especially on a night like tonight, when I've been at loose ends, feeling alone, feeling sorry for myself--I'd be a complete moron to turn that down, wouldn't I?"
"Not if the idea didn't appeal to you," Fraser said gently. It was easy to say, because he was quite clear the idea did appeal to his friend.
Ray Vecchio's soft, lovely eyes seemed huge as they searched Fraser's. "Jeez, Benny. You are so beautiful, you know that?"
It was Fraser's turn to blush. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Ray put a hand on Ray Vecchio's shoulder.
Fraser leaned forward.
"Go ahead," Ray whispered, to one or both of them.
Fraser felt rather than saw Ray Vecchio lean toward him also. Their lips touched. He heard Ray humming his approval in the background.
