A Haunting Tale Affair by Karen Poitras (G)

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27, back to drive for another month. Given that yesterday was Halloween, I thought I'd start with this story.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Karen Poitras
Why this must be read:
Illya has moved into his dream home. Six months ago he lost Napoleon and he can't continue at U.N.C.L.E. without him. He's looking forward to relaxing, gardening and swimming in his pool.

Then things start to go awry. And he begins to feel as if he's being watched. A chill sometimes goes through him.

But it's not what you think it is...

Napoleon shouldn't have died; they had less than 2 months to go before they would be forced to retire. They had it all planned, they would retire and go to Vegas and live out the rest of their lives sitting on a porch talking about the old times, living in a Victorian home with a two-car garage and a pool. They would have huge parties and invite all the lovely young ladies in the neighborhood to come for a swim. Yeah, it was going to be great!

But, now that would never come to be. He, Illya, had been left behind. To pick up the pieces and the loneliness of his life. He was alone!

Out of all the things he had faced in his every day life of spies he had only been afraid of one thing. Of growing old and being alone. It wasn't fair. They had saved the world a thousand times, you think Napoleon's loving and merciful God could have been just a little fair and allowed them to live to be old together!

When I first read this story, I was worried that it would be terribly maudlin, but it's such a beautiful vision of how I'd like things to work out for Illya and Napoleon. Thanks for the lovely rec; I really enjoyed re-reading it.
