Why this must be read:

Laurelnola has gotten the reputation for writing adorable baby!Clark fics which always bring in a whole new perspective on what it was like growing up even before what we all got to see in the Pilot. Most of the stories are cute, but this one is heart breaking. Smallville plays a lot on how hard it is for Clark to fit in and A Good Life shows us that these problems started long before hormones were involved. It's bittersweet and moving and shows the reader just how much Clark means to Martha and how hard she struggles to both understand and protect him.

Excerpt:

They’d had to come to storm cellar quite a few times since then, she realized, to sit silently while Clark’s senses came down from their overload, and he could regain control. Martha looked down at his little face, and wiped a sweaty dark curl from his forehead. She wanted to kiss him, but was still afraid that any touch or movement would set off his senses again. Allowing herself the luxury of squeezing him just a little bit, she stifled a sob for her son’s pain.

“Momma?” he whispered, and Martha caught herself. She didn’t want him to hear her crying.

“Yes, Clark,” she said, knowing her voice was thick.

“Is this the reason kids won’t play with me?”
