Why this must be read:
oh, good lord, I love this story. Basically, it's a retelling of the show's pre-series canon with the Winchesters as werewolves. Yes, werewolves. Sounds crazy, but Mel makes it work so well. Not only has she written a beautiful and amazing story, she's created an entire mythology, an entire *world* with these werewolves. Everything in this story is so vivid and real, has that touch of truth to it that makes it so unforgettable and original.

The months before Sam's birth were dark times--Mary's father died, then John's mother. The pack shrank and changed as members drifted off to mate or join other packs. Winter clung to the mornings and snuck back in after dark; their paws cracked and bled from the cold and the ice, and they grew restless.

And then Connor went and killed that girl, putting them all in danger, putting them all on their guard--especially John, who'd lost so much already, and still had more to lose than anyone. There was talk of moving, of leaving Lawrence for somewhere smaller, more rural, where they could run freer.

"We should leave here," Caleb insisted, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed over his chest. Around him, heads nodded in agreement, but no one else spoke up.

"According to the papers, that girl was killed by a feral dog," Mary said, shifting Dean to her other hip over her swollen belly. John flashed her a grateful smile, then turned to the circle of faces around him.

"It's been taken care of. There's no reason for us to go anywhere."

Jim cleared his throat from the corner of the room. "People are still asking a lot of questions, John."

"Then let them ask." John stood up, and gazes fell, one by one, as he met them. "We haven't done anything wrong, and we're not leaving."
