Why this must be read:
I usually shy away from recommending something I was a beta on as I feel it looks too much like blowing one's own horn, but occasionally a story is just too good to skip This one by saklani2 is a good example.

Napoleon has stopped caring. Missions don't mean anything to him anymore, things just don't matter, so he has decided to leave U.N.C.L.E. -- to Illya's great unhappiness. Solo promises his partner that before he leaves he'll finish their current mission, which is on Hopi land. There he learns a new word - "Koyaanisqatsi” - meaning "life out of balance." That sums up Napoleon's feelings perfectly. Now if he or Illya only knew how to get the balance back...


"I can’t keep doing this, Illya. It’s eaten through me until there’s nothing left. Too many beatings, too many killings, too many THRUSH agents and operations... too little of anything else.” He could not hold his friend’s eyes anymore and dropped his head toward the bedspread. “I thought I was immune... it’s rather humiliating to find out I’m not.”

“Why did you not tell me these things before?” Illya asked, an unfamiliar note of pleading in his voice.

(Illya) “You think I would be better off with another partner?”

Napoleon turned reluctantly to face his friend, holding his eyes firmly. “Yes.”

The door rattled on its frame, as Illya turned and stormed out, slamming it behind him.
