Why this must be read:

Starting in December 2006, Tara began posting a series of linked drabbles and snippets set in the universe of Battlestar Galactica. She completed the cycle and posted all of the material at her website, and the result makes for one hell of a reading experience.

The plot was relatively simple: Benton Fraser, RCMP, is snatched from his quiet, blissful life with Ray Kowalski, and finds himself the captive of Leoben in the distant future. It turns out Fraser has a role to play in the BSG saga, and the revelation of exactly what that role constitutes will haunt anyone familiar with BSG. (And even if you haven't seen either dS or BSG, this is an amazing read that tells you everything you need to know).

What sounds like a silly premise is anything but: this is an extremely dark and disturbing story, breathlessly written and paced within an inch of it's life. There is non-con, torture, and Fraser finds himself faced with a desperate and intractable choice late in the story that could bring about humanity's destruction. I don't think I've read anything in the fandom that pushed Fraser to his limits (and beyond) in the way Tara does here. That the fic has a semi-happy resolution, where Fraser pulls back from the brink, reunites with RayK and, while damaged by his experiences, learns to go on, makes the violence and terror he experiences under Leoben's hands all the more disturbing. This crossover isn't for the faint of heart, but it is so well done that it shouldn't be missed. If you're feeling brave, you should

Fraser always wakes up naked and alone, but for the centurion standing guard over his alcove. He assumes this is part of Leoben’s efforts to break him, though it might just be a general expression of contempt for humankind. Cylons, Fraser has found, are always eager to show him how little they care about his species. However, he thinks they’re anxious for humanity’s attention, much the way a rebellious teenager will constantly misbehave in an effort to make sure her parents are still watching.

Still, it’s tiresome being kept naked, and it’s beginning to wear on him in ways small and large, just as the dinners with Leoben are becoming more difficult. Early on, Fraser once made an effort to fight back, but all that garnered him was a knife driven through his hand. He tries to draw his right hand into a fist as he thinks back to that night, then stops, giving it up as a lost cause. Leoben’s aim had been true, slicing through at least one tendon, possibly two, and it’s unlikely that Fraser will ever regain the full use of his hand.

Not that it matters.

There, see? Yikes. Even if you have to read with your hand over your eyes, give this story a try. And please let Tara know what a genius she is for breaking Fraser so beautifully, and then remembering to put him back together afterward.

I am really intrigued here, but will this spoil BSG for me? I am in the middle of watching S2, should I wait until I've watched more?
