My Father's Eyes by Jedi-Princess-Solo (PG-13)
As this is my last rec of the month, I'd like to give one more plug for people to sign up to rec for Star Wars on
crack_van. I am sure there are many SW fans out there who have fics aplenty to rec!
Fandom: STAR WARS EU
Pairing: Gen
Length: 3000 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Jedi-Princess-Solo's Fanfiction.net Profile
Why this must be read:
For this rec, I delve into the dreaded Expanded Universe. Yes, I know some of it is awful. I myself just pick and choose which aspects of the EU I like and completely disregard the rest. As background for this fic, in the EU, Leia and Han marry and have three children, the youngest of whom they name Anakin. This fic explains in quiet, poignant language exactly why Leia would name her son after a father she never knew. Indeed, the part of him she did know, she hated. At first glance, it seems inexplicable that she would give her son the name of her former enemy, but this fic explains it very well.
The story is completely from Leia's point of view. It's a quick read, but it's also a very memorable story. It's really a character study of how Leia came to accept her parentage. Highly recommended.
* * *
When I was three years old, my first tutor asked me what color my father's eyes were.
It's a faint memory, distant and blurry, which I now know the Force has helped me to preserve. At the time, though, I knew nothing of the Force or its importance to my family, so I didn't know there was anything unusual about my gifted memory.
Her name was Sabé, and I think she knew my mother.
My real mother, that is, the one whose face I can barely see in my dreams, whose smile was kind and gentle, even as her eyes shimmered with tears of infinite sadness.
Sabé had been working with me on colors, and when she asked me what color my father's eyes were, I know she expected me to say brown. In truth, I remember being just as surprised by my answer as she was, because Bail Organa had unmistakably dark eyes to match his dark hair, but I didn't know where the word had come from.
Blue.
