Title: Bonnie And Clyde Didn't Work Alone
Author: Maidenjedi
Characters: Boba Fett, River Tam
Length: ~1k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maidenjedi
Author Website: AO3 and FFN Profile and LJ Tags
Why this must be read:

Two scruffy 'verses are these, nice and dirty and plagued with everyday concerns from our galaxy: how to make a living, survive and even thrive. River and Boba are bruised and alone, and they connect tenuously. Their characters need someone, and they are there for each other. Life doesn't require much more than this.

Why this must be read:

Family Portrait is one of the more thought-through, detailed examples of worldbuilding that I can think of. Obi-Wan must rely on fourteen year-old Anakin for advice in how to resemble a family for an intricate undercover mission on a planet openly hostile to Jedi. Along with EU's Jude Watson character, Jedi Knight Siri Tachi, the trio delve into a mystery about a fellow Jedi's involvement with his birth family. It's a nice long, plotty read. There is an excellent cover for this story here. [livejournal.com profile] fernwithy also posts at The ForceDOTnet, but the site makes me nervous with its story truncation issues that are not fixed after one year.

24th-Jun-2013 09:33 pm The Tournament by Ruth Baulding (K)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: none
Length: 6k
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: FFN Profile
Why this must be read:

Mischief and wry humor are the courses du jour. This story follows an unlikely narrator, Jocasta Nu, the caretaker of the Jedi Archives, throughout the course of the day. This particular day is a significant one for senior Padawans as it is the occasion of a contest of cunning and endurance that is held only once every seven years. It is set pre-TPM during Obi-Wan Kenobi's apprenticeship to Qui-Gon Jinn.

I simply cannot recommend Ruth's body of work strongly enough. Her prose is stunningly beautiful and elegant, her characterizations wonderfully accurate. She does not merely borrow characters from the GFFA and use them in her stories. She fleshes out the characters completely, and in doing so, adds something to the original portrayal that was not there before.

Hi there! I'll be driving the van for SW this month. I must admit that my interests skew slightly towards the prequel era. However, I will be kicking things off with an OT rec. Another note: this is my first time driving the van, so if you have any feedback about my posts or the recs themselves, please let me know. So, without further ado....

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Vader and various Skywalker grandchildren
Length: 8k and 13k
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: FFN profile
Why this must be read:

In a universe where Luke and Vader go their separate ways after Palpatine's demise on the second Death Star, the Dark Lord returns from an extended, shall we say, "exploration" of the Unknown Regions to find the Empire all but dissolved. He must now adjust to life in a new role - grandfather. Lord Vader's Limpet has Vader reluctantly host Luke's enthusiastic toddler aboard the Executor while Driving Lord Vader finds the (ex)Sith helping a teenaged Anakin Solo to obtain his first driving license. Both are completely hilarious and, as are all of frodogenic's offerings, very well-written. Have fun.

Luke and Mara have a thornier road to romance than most couples. Who else can say that their Other Half held notions of murder towards them? Why this must be read:

The EU has given fandom interesting characters in interesting series, and I'm talking Jude Watson at the moment, fantastically prolific as she was. Knight Siri Tachi, undercover for a good cause, finds herself at loose ends as she reenters the Jedi Order. Master Meddler Yoda does his best to keep all the Jedi in his care at their peak efficiency. Read this to find out how taking a Padawan helps Siri find her balance. [livejournal.com profile] emthejedichic has written a sparkling AU starring Siri and Xanatos, a pairing made most appealing by the talent displayed by this author. As a fillip, this end of the timeline ought not to be Jossed by any Sequel Trilogy, and there is a great deal to be said for that.

Why this must be read:

Because before the television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there was a Dark Horse comic series by Haden Blackman called "Obsession" which dealt with mutual obsessions: Obi-Wan for his personal foe, Asajj Ventress, and Ventress' obsession for the Jedi and Obi-Wan in particular. Dark Horse gave us fans excellent departure points for characterization, and this fanfic reaches its destination: a rich, dark place, like 60 per cent cacao dark chocolate. The author gives us drabbles, too, as further decadent sweets.

Why this must be read:

This story contains many of Jude Watson's characters in a Temple story of intrigue and blackmail: Tahl, Xanatos, Bruck Chun, Reeft, Garen Muln and an adorable Bant. The story allows the reader unfamiliar with Watson's EU tales to figure out all the characters pretty swiftly. The action plumbs the depths of the archaic Temple so very well, and the Wodehouse-ian style of writing made me giggle as Qui-Gon strives to explain his actions to Yoda from a safe distance away in hyperspace. He succeeds, I think.

Because there is a genre 'angsty sexy fluff' and this author writes it well, with not only Obi-Wan and Anakin, but Quinlan, too. Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] pronker and I'm happy to drive any vehicle whatsoever at the moment. Let's back cautiously out of the driveway, hands at 10 and 2 o'clock, because recently the Star Wars fandom exploded with the news that Disney bought Lucasfilm. What 2015 will bring is a new Star Wars movie, Episode VII, possibly Jossing the EU as we know it today. With this in mind, let's read an excellent fanfiction resulting from the EU.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Shada D'ukal/Talon Karrde
Length: About 2k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] coalitiongirl
Author Website: Links to stories on left
Why this must be read:

It's an excellent depiction of the feelings that successful people get, that somehow being in a relationship will spoil something vital in their lives, or end something important, and yet they venture into love anyway, gambling their tender hearts away. Featuring Shada D'ukal and Talon Karrde circa 5 ABY, she a Mistryl Shadow Guard and he a smuggler and information broker, the compelling writing will carry you along through the changes that years bring to their lives together. There is more about Shada here, her story as convoluted as can be, yet another reason to love Star Wars.

Why this must be read:

As a forever fan of the hurt/comfort genre, I came across this story which takes the 'hurt' to a brand new level: Luke has lost yet another love and is heartbroken, and Mara twists the knife. She doesn't mean to; the circumstances of this story lead to a rapprochement between her and Luke. To see why and how, please read this parody, a fantastic bit of well-in-character writing which pokes a bit of fun at the entire concept of hurt/comfort.

Because this story has intrigue, adult concepts and themes, slash, and an unforgettable character in Alexis. As the author describes the story, "When Alexis Ts'umin accidentally meets his Emperor in the Imperial Gardens his life spins out of control, setting him on a collision course with assassins, Darth Vader, and Palpatine's repressed desires." The characters include Palpatine, Mara Jade and pretty much everyone you'd expect to see at the Imperial Court circa A New Hope, plus some OCs. Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] crack_van prompts the poster to submit personal favorites, and this is one of mine, both the archive and the author. Dealing with the tumult surrounding theforceDOTnet's upgrading cannot be easy, but valiant is the word for fanfic authors, and numerous stories are there for the reading on the temporary boards, including this excellent one. Han Solo and Leia Organa-Solo's daughter, Jaina, is the focus of the story and though recent EU events tie her with another male character, when reading the New Jedi Order series, I thought that Kyp Durron had a definite appeal to her, and vice versa. So, this story, tightly written with a stunning lightsaber duel, fills the bill for any Kyp/Jaina shipper. If you are unfamiliar with the EU family of Princesses and smugglers, simply know that Han's film persona lives on in his daughter, and Jaina does not lack for Leia's fiery heritage, either.

Why this must be read:

In the Alternate Reality stories, only a sure hand keeps characterizations true, no matter the choice of setting. This author takes the reality of an ad agency on Earth, places recognizable forms of beloved Star Wars characters in their proper places, and the drama unfolds. She has the Force with her, because not only is the tone consistent in each chapter, but an additional entry fleshes out the marriage that we glimpse in the main stories. Why this must be read:

Long-lived franchises have delighted fans forever, and in between the cracks of Fabulous Source Material, Spin Offs, Filmed Versions, Novelizations-of-the-Movie, Television Versions and Ice Show Versions, fall the little bits that we love all the more because they show true imagination. Coming from the early prequel novel The Approaching Storm, Jedi Master Luminara Unduli's Padawan, Barriss Offee, is approximately Anakin Skywalker's age, and they share a camaraderie in the book that has given rise to some ficcage. Coming from the more recent Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated TV show, Barriss approaches Anakin's Padawan's age, she and Ahsoka being approximately 15 and it is in this reality that the story occurs. From the friendship we see in the TV program, [livejournal.com profile] themacunleashed reveals a very special relationship between the two girls as they fight a war in which they should not have to shoulder responsibilities. So who can blame them if they want to escape and go clubbing? Not I. It's poignant and very much in character with the established TV canon.

Why this must be read:

Because, as a Star Wars fan, every time you entered a bookstore, you would be aware of the EU, if not actually capable of reading all of it. There are folks who have read all of it, and they intimidate me, but like many a fan, I pick and choose what to read. I hadn't read any of the post-ROTJ books after the New Jedi Order series concluded, so this story, set in the time of Han's grieving over Chewbacca's death, rang a familiar chime: it's Han in the story, never mind if you have not become acquainted with his EU daughter, Jaina. For that reason, I recommend this. It's got a nice humorous bent, but the grief is there, almost as a character.

24th-Mar-2012 09:04 pm Son of Vader and Father Before Me (series) by JediMara77 (G)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Gen featuring Mara Jade, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker
Length: two one-shots
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jedimara77
Author Website: fanfiction.net profile
Why this must be read: This well-written series of two short fics contains some breathtakingly intense moments. It offers fascinating glimpses into the most poignant and compelling relationship in Star Wars: that of Luke and his father. The impact is in no way diminished by the fact that the two never interact directly in this series.

In Son of Vader, Mara and Vader talk about Luke, a conversation that leaves Mara stunned and mystified. Father Before Me expands on Mara's reaction upon finally finding out the identity of Luke's father. She confronts Luke about it, and a deepening connection forms between them as they realize that they both know exactly what it feels like to have "everything you thought you knew turned upside down in one single second", and Luke finally voices some of his anger and hurt about the way he found out the truth about his father.

Why this must be read: JediMara77 is a fantastic writer and choosing a fic was difficult. I decided on this one because its a nice stand-alone fic (although there is a NC-17 "shine" to one of the chapters available at [livejournal.com profile] lukeandmara). Mara and Luke have to pretend to be married while on a mission, accompanied by some of the members of Rogue Squadron. This piece was amusing and had a lovely, heartwarming ending. Why this story must be read: I remember reading this fic back in 2005 and when I dropped out of fandom, it seems RedGold did too. The amazing thing was when I re-joined fandom, I was delighted to see that RedGold had picked the story up and finished it! I'm a sucker for babyfics in all fandoms and this is an exceptional example. Mara finds herself pregnant and when she notices a Force signature close to that of Luke, she expects some answers. What follows is a wonderful, mature take on how the two of them work things out and eventually find happiness. Definitely worth a read!

Why this must be read: This is the second memory loss story I am reccing this month. This time, it is Mara who has lost her memory. This story is a heartwarming tale of Luke trying to help Mara not only regain her memory, but move through the emotional baggage she has accumulated from her time serving the Emperor. Mara without her memories of her time as the Emperor's Hand is something else and Luke is his perfect, Jedi self. While this story is teen, there is a naughty outtake which fits in with chapter 19, available here. Why This Must Be Read: As someone who has had a relative who has suffered from a form of amnesia, I'm quite critical of the memory loss trope. However, this is certainly a diamond in the rough and the first of two memory loss stories I'll be reccing this month. In this fic, Luke loses his memories due to a speeder accident. There are so many awesome ones and she is such an amazing, prolific writer in the fandom. First off, please note that while the first of the pair of stories is PG and kid-friendly, oh boy the second one is not.

Daddy's Secret Vice is a short glimpse into family life for the Skywalkers and Mara dresses up as the Star Wars version of Santa, Preeni Pi. Length: ~35k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lotusflower85
Author Website:  Her FF.net profile, although she has other stories on her LJ

Why this must be read: This story was written in 05-06 but still remains a staple of the fandom. The story is structured by the comparisons of two time periods: the prime story is ~32ABY, after the Vong War and the second time period is ~12ABY. Both time periods deal with the fallout of Callista Ming and the effect she has on Luke himself and the Skywalker family unit, told through the eyes of Mara Jade.

Callista's return causes so many negative memories for Mara and it is just heartbreaking to read her feelings and emotions, particularly in the past, where you want her to know that things eventually work out. The current timeline of the EU has rendered this fic AU, but this story is not one to be missed. JadeLotus weaves heartbreak and hope, past and present, and the overwhelming concept of love so well in this fic and her emotive language leaves you laughing and crying with the characters.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Luke Skywalker/Mara Jade
Length: ~226k
Author on LJ: Not on LJ
Author Website: Kataja's Star Wars Fanfiction
Why this must be read: Kataja has created such a fantastic Alternate Universe in this story that it is so easy to believe this course of events actually transpired. Kataja's story begins early in RotJ where, along with Han and Chewbacca, he also rescues Mara Jade from Jabba's Palace. Kataja then thoroughly explores the life of Luke on Home One where Mara is there, secretly plotting espionage against the Rebellion.

The amount of detail here is fantastic. Kataja really pulls you in to this world. There are a few other interesting characters that pop up. If you are a hard-core Luke/Mara shipper, I would say that this story serves as a prelude to what is to come. Kataja does plan on this story being the first in a trilogy. There's a hefty dose of Luke/Other and a small Mara/Other but don't let that scare you. This story is an amazing example of the intelligent and thoughtful writing that comes out of the Star Wars fandom, and a long, plotty read to boot.
