Why this must be read:
Some of you may well know
timothy_quinn from other fandoms, so will already know what a superb writer she is. This story is her first venture into writing Gibbs/Ducky and I am still impatiently waiting for her next story. Carry Me Through is a song fic, which Tim describes as 'fluff', but don't let that fool you into thinking insipid, out of character or overly fluffy. The story isn't.
It's very much a love story of two men, two men very much recognisable as their on-screen characters, that has the simple premise of Jethro contemplating his life over his inevitable cup of coffee. He looks at how people see him, what he is really like, and how only one person (Ducky) really sees the true Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Tim intersperses the lyrics with the story to great effect, so that they appear to be part of the story and not just put in so that it can be called a songfic.
Yes, I guess it is technically 'fluff', but it moved me to blink very hard indeed and have a lump in my throat more than once. It is deep, tender, moving, loving, full of affection, and shows the deep friendship the two men have, a friendship that almost transcends and at the same time compliments the fact that they are lovers. It contains rich mix of emotion, bitter-sweet in parts, chock full of love, affection, tenderness, understanding and spot on characterisation.
The warm aroma of hot coffee was balm to Jethro’s tired soul.
He’d had a cold, damp, miserable day in the field, and the stench of death had clung to his body like the last vestige of some particularly bad dream.
I don’t need a lot of things
I can get by with nothing
But he was home now. He’d showered and changed into fresh sweats; and even though the images of what had truly been a day from hell still lingered in the back of his mind somewhere, the minute Duck smiled, put a mug of liquid nectar into his hands and kissed his forehead, he felt infinitely more human again.
Of all the blessings life can bring
I’ve always needed something
He looked across the kitchen to where the man he loved stood at the hob stirring what smelt like mulligatawny soup.
Duck’s very own family recipe for staving off the ‘flu after a day spent soaked to the skin in a frozen lake, pulling out bodies.
But I’ve got all I want
When it comes to loving you
Jethro smiled.
It didn’t matter that he’d not been sick for a single day in his life; Duck was making him hot soup.
You’re my only reason
You’re my only truth
No one ever saw him quite as Ducky did.
No one ever really cared to.
But Ducky knew him. He knew just what was needed and when he needed it most. Usually before he knew it himself.

Reccing is fun (if a little time consuming) as you get to revisit stories :-)
