Why this must be read:
I had an enormously difficult time choosing between two stories by this author. In the end, I chose this one because it deals with something that hasn't been dealt with in any of my other recs this month: Cuddy's death. The writing is, as
pwcorgigirl's always is, superb: gentle and powerfully evocative. And the deft handling of the topic renders it utterly believable. Read on to meet the five people Cuddy sees when she's dead.
Read Begin, and cease, and then again begin.

Her father, back in the days when he passionately defended environmental causes, used to say the sea was alive, that it was the earth's true heart and the mother of all life. She finds herself matching her strides to the rolling waves.
She hasn’t gone far when she sees a dark shape in the fog. Her pace quickens, and the figure becomes clearer. It’s a woman, an old woman with her white hair pulled up into a bun. She’s wearing a long black coat and a matching lace scarf.
The woman turns and smiles.
“Lisa,” she says. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
