What's Luck Got to Do with It? by S T (NC-17)

Fandom: Magnificent 7
Pairing: Ezra/Vin
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author's Website: for this story, Tar 'n Feathers
Why this must be read:

Of all the pairings of the Mag7 universes, probably the one I have the hardest time accepting is Ezra and Vin.  From the series itself, it's clear that the two men are about as opposite as night and day - and more significantly, other than the other five men they ride with, they have virtually nothing in common.  But they are one of the more popular pairings, and for those of us who love Vin, and who will take him any way we can get him, we accept E/V - even though I do it with a certain level of 'suspension of disbelief'.

Until - I was pointed to this story.  S T does something that very very few Ezra writers do - she makes him as dominant in the story as I see him in the series.  Not 'tie-Vin-to-the-bed' dominant, but, to quote Ezra from the show itself, "I abhor gambling and as such leave nothing to chance".  In this story - he does leave nothing to chance, and it is wonderful and wicked because of it!  The characters are awesome - true to the show and yet their interaction in the story is sound as well, something I could actually accept.  The writing is strong, the story is fun, and I just love Ezra's very polite way of taking charge.

Regarding Ezra/Vin pairing, I think a lot of fans of the pairing got inspiration from one episode. Think it's the one with the woman who is after Chris; in it, Chris and the woman are in a buggy and the other six are on horses following. You see Vin and Ezra teasing each other, mock fighting over food (fried chicken maybe?). They seemed especially relaxed and friendly with each other in the scene. It inspired me to find the pairing believable, at least.

I would love to read it but I click on the story, get the "I am over 18" window, click ok, and nothing happens.

I know it seems an unlikely pairing, but if it's well done - like this is - it works very nicely. Not quite my favourite M7 pairing, but it's up there.

Ezra and Vin are actually the two characters I enjoy the most, although I can see how some might find it a harder sell. I think of moments like in "Working Girls" where Vin mentions Ezra is "graceful". Or the scene in Collector - I don't see it so much as Vin ignoring Ezra as knowing him well enough to read him well.

I guess that's where I see the point of intersect - Vin, as a tracker, looks for details, behaviors, etc. to tell him the truth of things. Ezra might pretend to be a lot of things, talks a good game, but when it comes down to it, his true nature shows through. I like the pairing for that kind of gentle faith Vin seems to have in Ezra when everyone else doubts him.

(Off to read the rec now!)
