Why this must be read:

There is a "repeated theme" (as crack_van's Rules for Posting encourages noting) and school of thought that portrays Obi-Wan Kenobi as a saintly man. There is also a school of writing called 'mush.' 'Mush' means sentimental stories picturing happy Jedi with minimal conflicts, totally unlike fics mit sturm und drang, tears, forbidden loves, painful partings, etc. These two schools combined with one baby Jedi ought to produce a story sweeter than high-fructose corn syrup, and this fic is. It is also not devoid of characterization. A tense meeting with the Jedi Council over some problem with the apple of Master Qui-Gon Jinn's eye, his Padawan Xanatos, has left Jinn absent-mindedly forgetting those darn enormous staircases in his Temple home. Oooopsie, watch out, Ki-Gee! Yes, Ki-Gee takes a tumble and little Light Side of the Force personified, two year-old Initiate Kenobi, toddles to his rescue. "The Best Gift" is cute, it depicts Qui-Gon's once-and-future perfect Padawan Obi-Wan, as well as his multi-flawed current Padawan (Xanatos in an off-screen performance that hints at his character well), and it is fairly short. Just like a single petit-four, this fic is sweet but there isn't enough of it to be sickening. Bastet combined a prompt with a little mush and wrote in response to a challenge: 'Write a story in which Qui-Gon gives or receives a gift.' This story starts about one-half of the way down the linked page.

EAD 030513 Recently remodeled TFN has a truncated version of this story, and when their coding is corrected, I shall link to it. Otherwise, this is the best I can do with it, as it doesn't seem to be anywhere else on the 'net.

EAD 011414 No fix for TFN's site thus far, and [livejournal.com profile] crack_van closes tomorrow. Ho hum.
