Why This Must Be Read:
I'm tempted to just say "because it's super awesome!" but that's not very descriptive. This is an AU story where Frank gets a job as a nanny to Gerard's daughter. That's right, kid fic and a "meet cute" scenario. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Frank makes the best "not a nanny" ever, and Gerard's sweet and scatterbrained. But it's the kid that steals the show, a five year old named Chloe. A lot of kid fics are sickly sweet, this one gets the balance just right.
The building is a giant former warehouse in a neighborhood that Frank doesn't tend to think of as going along with "exorbitant" salaries and he suddenly thinks that maybe he should have done a little background checking of his own before showing up. There's a call box by the door and he finds the button marked "Way, G & C" and presses.
"Frank? Is that you?" The voice from his phone earlier comes through staticky.
"Yeah, it's me. You're not, like, up there with a hatchet and jigsaw waiting to dismember me, right?"
There's a long silence and Frank figures he's just ruined yet another job opportunity, this time without even making it through the door.
"Drat," Gerard says blandly. "You've discovered my dastardly plan. I am thwarted."
"No," Frank grins, "that's cool. I just wanted to know what I was getting into. Buzz me up?"
"Top floor," Gerard says and the electronic release on the door sounds.
Getting to the top floor requires a shaky ride in a freight elevator that doesn't leave Frank feeling terribly confident that he's not actually riding to his doom. When the elevator door opens, though, the hallway is bright and clean, freshly painted and shows no signs of recent crime scenes. The mat in front of the apartment door is so intricately decorated that he's afraid to step on it.
He knocks and doesn't have to wait long for an answer.

(This fic also came under fire in some weird non-fannish humor site, somebody who thinks us bandslashers are really bizarre. He just couldn't understand why someone would write such a long story, and put so much effort into something with no money making potential. Eh, if squares don't get it...)

*rolls eyes so hard she almost sprains something* Mundanes! I wonder what they would think of Arsenic's prison AU of 142,000 words that I just finished rereading :-) I know you've said you've got a prison squick but give it a try sometime, it's only the first few chapters that are completely set in the prison. They get released, Mikey first, then Gerard, then Bob, and finally Frank, and after that a lot of the story centers around this community center run by Brian Schecter (with the help of the Panic boys and some other band peeps) and the soup kitchen run by the church Brendon's a pastor in. There's a lot of similarities to Lucy's The Center actually and it got a lot of the same "feel" to it, lots of secondary characters but properly fleshed-out ones and they never seem superfluous even though the main story's about Gerard/Bob and Mikey/Frank.
