Why this must be read: I have a confession to make: I find most sex scenes boring. In fact, I've been known to read PWPs *just* for the framing dialogue at the beginning and end, and completely skip the NC-17 part. The stories that I read *for* the sex I could probably count on one hand.
"Scarlet" is one of them.
Not to disparage the rest of the tale:viva_gloria takes a character sadly neglected in PotC fic and makes him real. This is *true* in a way few stories are, in its depiction of Barbossa's damnation, Jack's curious vulnerability, and the haunting loneliness which is the essence of the curse.
The really hot Jack/Barbossa sex scene is good, too, of course. Featuring the best crossdressing!Jack I've ever read, with the sort of mutual manipulation mindfuck that hits all my kinks. Or you can just read it as straight slash, and that's good too.
