Negotiations & Love Stories Series - Reggie (NC-17)

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch (slash)
Length: 188K total
Author on LJ: DNA (I don't believe)
Author Website: http://www.thepitsarchive.com/stories/Reggie/Reggie.htm
Why this must be read:

I only just discovered this author and this series in particular. I'm so glad I found her! She isn't someone I'd heard a lot about. Of course, perhaps there are entire lists devoted to discussing her work, and I just don't know about them. There are/have been a lot of authors writing in S&H, past and present, so it's difficult to keep tabs on everyone.

I'm not usually a fan of songfic, as I find a lot of it overly sentiment and not particularly well done. That can't be said of this series, which was inspired by the music of Paul Simon. Negotiations & Love Stories is a series of seven stories. None of them are particularly long. They range is size from 22K to 34K. When read together, it feels as if you're viewing snapshots, instances or moments plucked from the lives of these two men.

The series begins post-SR. Despite a recent setback, Starsky has recovered to the point where he could qualify for reinstatement with the police force. But he doesn't want to. He wants to do something else with his life and fears dropping that bombshell on his partner.

Hutch takes the announcement better than Starsky had thought he might. So Starsk decides to reveal something even more earth-shaking. He's fallen in love with his partner. When Hutch takes that too in stride, the men begin a tentative journey into the next stage of their lives.

They move in together. Hutch gets a new partner and Starsky goes back to school. These stories trace how their lives weave together in ways both tender and pretty darned funny. There's a bit of angst thrown in, and one story gives me my hurt/comfort fix. But for the most part, this is a gentle series that doesn't really focus on the momentous events in the guys' lives, but the quiet, everyday ones. Not a ton happens in each story, but the cumulative effect is one of an entire universe being reshaped in ways that are utterly new, yet at the same time familiar and almost inevitable. It's a lovely, satisfying read.

An excerpt from Negotiations & Love Stories...

"I know you know what I'm gonna say, but I'm gonna say it, anyway." Starsky took a deep breath. "I love you." Hutch opened his mouth to respond, but Starsky wouldn't let him. "No, don't. I've got to get this all out, okay? And then you can say whatever you want to say. I just have to say it while I'm thinkin' it." He asked the question with his eyes, and Hutch nodded silently.

Starsky stood up, suddenly nervous. "I don't know when this happened," he said. "I don't even know that it happened, or if - if maybe it was just always there, you know? An' maybe I just realized - I love you." He chuckled. "The thing that worried me about telling you that I didn't want to be your partner anymore was the fact that I was also going to tell you that I did want to be your partner, just, in a different way.

"Only," he argued, "I don't even know if that's really it. Maybe I'm just worried that I'm not gonna get to spend all of this time with you anymore, and I'm gonna miss you. Maybe I'm trying to replace that - I mean, we work together, we play together, we spend most of our time with each other. Even now that we haven't been cop-partners for months, we still spend most of our time together. If you aren't here, I'm at your place, nights, weekends. We can't seem to let go, you know?"

"I know I don't want to," Hutch said, quietly.

"But what does that mean? Do you know? Does it mean that we're afraid we're gonna lose the friendship that we've had so long, or does it mean - "

"Does it mean that the friendship isn't enough anymore?" Hutch finished for him.

"Yeah." Starsky sat down again. "I've been tryin' to think about it - tryin' to wrap my brain around it, an' I just can't."

I've never seen or read any Starsky and Hutch - but the naming thing is making me want to try, because I love Paul Simon backwards!

it's the slasiest canon relationship I've ever seen

I have actually heard that, and since I've been a slasher since the heydays of Remus/Sirius I've been meaning to remedy my tragic lack of knowledge. You may have pushed me over with your enthusiasm! :)

Hi! Thanks so much for the lovely rec! (I am the Author Formerly Known As Reggie In S/H fandom, hee.) I'm thinking of getting back into writing some more S/H (since it's been about 8 years since I've done so, and I think re-reading some of the old stuff may be just what spurs me on. :)

Do you have those stories archived any-where else? The website seems to be expired.

I'm in the process of putting all of the fanfic that I've written on my lj. It's slow, since there's 13 years of stuff to archive, but I've got some of the S/H stuff here: http://lucy-fic.livejournal.com/tag/starsky+%26+hutch
