Regrets by Saidicam29 (NC-17)

Fandom: STAR TREK (ORIGINAL SERIES)
Pairing: Sarek/Amanda
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] saidicam29 (but she's never posted anything)
Author Website: Vulcan's First Family or her TrekTales page
Why this must be read:

Okay, I admit it, I have a thing for Vulcans. I generally tend to go for aliens that are different enough (biologically and culturally) to be, well, alien, and yet still like us enough that we can understand and emphasize with them. Vulcans fit the bill to a T, and Saidicam29 does a good job of exploring this in a well-thought-out AU.

For Vulcans, family and lineage are all-important, and the basis for much of their culture. Star Trek tends to take it for granted that they are compatible (biologically and culturally) with humans, which is rather incredible if you think about it. (Green copper-based blood! Suppressing emotion!) Saidicam asks the question: what if it wasn't so easy? What if Sarek and Amanda, trying to live a traditional Vulcan life, couldn't have kids together? What if fundamental cultural differences led to fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of their relationship? What if they got divorced? Where do they go from there? Add in new relationships for both of them and the complications of an unexpected Pon Farr, and you've got the makings of a good, angsty story.
