Why this must be read:
Hi! I'm Laura, and I'm back behind the wheel for a second go-round of driving the van for Starsky & Hutch fandom. Over THIRTY YEARS of fic, folks - that should entice you to give it a try!
I'm fresh back from SHarecon, the bi-annual weekend party where we celebrate all things Starsky & Hutch, David Soul, Paul Michael Glaser, and all their friends and enemies. Oh, and the slash, snugged side-by-side with the gen.
And on to the rec!
As one of this year's co-winners of the Paula Wilshe Award for New Writers, awarded at SHarecon, Pepper is one of those authors who has a very unique style of writing. I always look forward to something new. She can dig into the psyche of even the smallest character, bringing them full to life and highlighting our favorite detectives in the process.
In this story, several of Starsky's conquests from the airline industry have gotten together for dinner at the same restaurant our favorite detectives are dining at, and are, like fangirls, discussing the fellows' "assets", as they are. But then, much like slash fangirls, the speculations about their partnership also begin. (See reference to weekend-long S&H party above!)
There was a short silence. After a moment, one of the voices asked, "So, do you think it's true that Darla had a threesome with Dave and that skank from ticketing?" It was said in a whisper that was frankly louder than a regular speaking voice.
Another voice chimed in. "And that not only was it a threesome, but it was in the phone booth on Adams by that bar, the one called Spotty's?"
Hutch jerked his head to look at his partner.
Starsky was quietly laughing. "Not true," he whispered.
Hutch rolled his eyes.
"So, ladies, here's a question. Do you think he and Ken ever get it on?"
Hutch felt his face was on fire. Horrified, Hutch put his chin down to his chest. He was thinking if this didn't constitute the use of the emergency door, then really nothing would.
"You mean, together? Is that what you're wiggling your fingers like that for?"
"Yeah, Pammy, I mean together. They spend enough time together and knowing Dave's appetite for pleasure, it's not hard to imagine. Add that to a partner that would do anything for him, well, a long stake out... you get the picture."
"Ken's is pretty sexy. He'd be really hard to resist."
"I, for one, think that's a pretty hot picture. Those two guys up close and real personal. Maybe the phrase 'assume the position' means something different to them with that situation?"
"Or this one, 'cover me.'"
"Oh my God, someone get me a fan!"
"Lorna, breathe!"
"I am breathing! That's part of my problem."
Hutch looked up and back at the wall. He noticed Starsky was looking at the wall, too.
He also noticed the smile had left Starsky's face.
