Why this must be read:

Because it's one of the least soppy, yet still romantic, Sparrington stories I've ever seen. Because it's beautiful. It's a good introduction into why Sparrington works, I think, and a nice character study of Commodore Norrington.

Norrington remembered he was never able to keep Elizabeth, not this way, but this man, this pirate, he was a different matter altogether and maybe--oh, Lord--maybe he could...

...just like that, Sparrow would vanish. Not like Elizabeth, sweet warmth fading in cold morning mists, no: more like the ever-receding horizon, endless, uncatchable. Always there, forever out of grasp.

That is very good. Lovely, strong Elizabeth and catches Jack's idiom beautifully.
